"I, Howard Brand, the Last Human, the Beast of the Apocalypse, have summoned thee Ugh-Zan, O great warlock, O mightiest servant of Tah-Um, to present thee with a gift for the One Infinite!"
Howard Brand attempting to forge an alliance with Ugh-Zan VI[src]

Ugh Zan VI, known by his titles as The Gargantuan Guardian, Warlock of the Portal, and Tah-Um's Foot (the latter losing something of its originally quite threatening tone in translation) was the sixth incarnation of the Ugh-Zan giants, and one of Mental's dreadful servants.

He was in charge of the Tunguska portal during the Tunguska Offensive, tasked with guarding it from opposing forces. He serves as the final boss of Serious Sam 4.

Overview[]

Ugh-Zan VI was, until very recently, only known from second-hand accounts. An informant working alongside the French Resistance suggested the existence of an enormous humanoid, possibly related to General Ugh-Zan IV (presumed to have been killed in the Battle of Alpha Centauri) and Ugh-Zan V (obliterated in Oslo, Norway), but details were scarce and General Brand suggested the information might be faulty. In actuality, he did exist, and was perhaps the largest version of the Ugh-Zan giants known to date.[1]

In appearance, he was a massive humanoid creature that stood approximately 475 meters tall. He was covered in metal plating and nine conductive metal rods have been placed on several regions of his body, such as his arms, legs, back and head. These rods served as electrical conductors that attracted lightining strikes, which in turn were used to heal Ugh-Zan.

Ugh-Zan VI and Brand

Brand summons Ugh-Zan to present him with the Holy Grail and Sam as a gift to Mental.

Ugh-Zan VI is summoned through the massive portal in Tunguksa by former Earth Defense Force General Brand (now transformed into a large humanoid monster after using the False Grail on himself) and presents both Sam and the false Grail as an offering to Mental, wanting to form an alliance with him. Once he was finished talking, Ugh-Zan VI takes a confused look at Brand and then swiftly rejects his offer by flicking him and his prize off of his hand.[2] Sam awakes in the midst of the battlefield in front of the portal and immediately began fighting the mighty warlock.

Defeating Ugh-Zan VI proves to be a difficult task, as nine conductive rods placed around his body allow him to heal any wounds Sam and the EDF can inflict on him. Hellfire drops crates containing C-4, a grappling hook and a parachute onto the field, with which Sam climbes onto Ugh-Zan VI's body to blow up the rods while fighting off Octanian soldiers that fly in on drones to support the warlock. Once all nine rods have been destroyed, Hellfire provides Sam with a mech to fight Ugh-Zan VI one on one. After a fierce battle, Ugh-Zan VI falls to his knees, but Professor Gottlieb Kiesel warned that he has only been temporarily stunned, and if he is not finished off quickly, he will rise again.[2]

Ugh-Zan VI dead

Ugh-Zan VI's head is blown off by the powers of the Grail.

Sam, thinking of an plan, grabs the False Grail, and destroys the golden snake figure coiled around it that had bitten and transformed Brand earlier into a monster. This initiates an unstable reaction to start forming within the artifact. With no time to waste, Sam requests air support from Hellfire, and she swiftly arrives in a helicopter to pick up him and to get just close enough to Ugh-Zan for Sam to toss the Grail into Ugh-Zan's mouth. The energy released by the exploding Grail causes his head to be blown into pieces, killing the giant and falling over. The EDF destroyed the portal shortly after by sending an ICBM missile with Brand attached through it.[3]

Powers and abilities[]

Ugh-Zan VI using laser

Ugh-Zan firing lasers from his eyes at Sam.

  • Massive Size: Ugh-Zan VI was the largest member seen in the Ugh-Zan dynasty so far, and also one of the largest creatures (and bosses) in the Serious Sam series. While his massive size was a useful asset to him, as he was large enough to overlook the entire battefield, his size also served as a flaw and could be easily exploited. This was shown when Sam, equipped with a grappling hook and a parachute, was able to easily traverse around Ugh-Zan's body to destroy the metal rods.[2]
  • Immense Durability and Endurance: Ugh-Zan VI was extremely powerful and highly resistant to conventional weapons. Even powerful weapons like the rockets or bullets fired by Earth Defense Force mechs took a while to deplete his health. He so durable in fact, that, after his health had been depleted during the battle, he was only temporarily stunned and Sam had to use the False Grail's mysterious extraterrestrial properties to finish him off.[2]
  • Laser Eye Beams: Ugh-Zan could fire beams of lasers from his eyes. This was one of his most powerful attacks and the beams were very difficult to avoid.
  • Magic: Ugh-Zan was proficient in the use of magic, and he had a number of abilities that he would use against his opponents. He could conjure homing fireballs from his hands or his mouth that would track his targets.
  • Regeneration: Ugh-Zan had the ability to regenerate after losing a substantial amount of his health, but this was only possible thanks to the metal rods that were attached to his body. When all of these these rods were destroyed, he was rendered vulnerable.

Appearance[]

As one of the warlock giants, Ugh-Zan VI towered far above many of Mental's other servants. Unlike other members of the Ugh-Zan dynasty Ugh-Zan VI only possessed two arms, and did not utilize any weaponry besides his own magical abilities and nine metal rods placed all over his body, which allowed him to rapidly heal his wounds. His mouth completely lacked lips and two massive horns with glowing red cracks adorned his skull. He wore a black mask and armor made from heavy metal plating and gold trimming.

Tactics[]

  • During the first phase of the battle, when the player is tasked to destroy the source of Ugh-Zan's regeneration, they should plant all 9 C-4 explosives and then detonate them all at once to make the process easier.
  • Avoid his projectiles by sidestepping or shooting them down. They can deal a lot of damage to both the player and the mech should the player choose to use it.
  • His rods are marked pink on the HUD, and some are harder to reach than others. Going around Ugh-Zan's body is the easiest way to find all 9 rods and taking them out quickly.
  • The player should not waste their time taking out any drones or Octanian troops should they show up. Doing so wastes ammunition and puts the player at risk of damage. It is best to avoid them as much as possible.
  • His lasers are hard to dodge and deal more damage than his projectiles. However, with precise timing, they can be avoided.
  • The player should be sure to stock up on health and armor from the crates, as they will be taking a lot of damage from both the drones, Octanian troopers and Ugh-Zan's attacks during this fight.
  • The mech's rockets are more effective on Ugh-Zan than the miniguns, so the player should use them on him whenever they get the chance.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Early concept designs show Ugh-Zan VI walking on all fours in a similar manner to an ape and having his face covered in metal plating.
  • Another concept design depicts Ugh-Zan VI having a completely different appearance and being depicted as a caterpillar-like creature.

Trivia[]

  • He is the tallest member of the Ugh-Zan giants.
  • Some of the armor plating that covers Ugh-Zan's body resembles some of the armor models from Serious Sam 1.
  • Ugh-Zan VI's mask plate is treated as a projectile with the same piercing power statistics as the SBC Cannon (350-750).[4]
    • While it normally would inflict no damage to a target with 751 HP or more, it can instantly gib the player should they get crushed by it. However, Ugh-Zan VI throws his mask plate so far away to his right that the player normally won't be able to reach it, let alone be crushed by it.
