The Time Warp is an alien artifact and gadget that has the unique ability to slow down time for a period of time when activated. It is first introduced in Serious Sam 4, and makes a second appearance in the game's expansion pack, Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem.

Overview[]

The time warp is a strange spherical device that was designed by the Sirians. Its purpose is not fully understood, but professor Gottlieb Kiesel believes it was created as part of the Sirians' research into the properties of time.[1]

When activated, the time warp will generate a large chronon distortion field around the user.[2] Within this "time bubble", all hostiles and their projectiles will be dramatically slowed down, while the player and any NPCs will continue to behave normally.

Appearances[]

Compared to other gadgets, time warps are more scarce and difficult to obtain, since they are usually found in secrets or rewarded after completing side objectives.

Serious Sam 4[]

The time warp is an uncommon gadget. The player obtains several of them after completing the final side objective in the level "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse", when Professor Kiesel informs the player about finding an alien artifact that Hermann Stein was researching on. In the later levels, it's often found in secrets.

After the level "Anathema Unto God", any gadgets, including any time warps the player had in their possession, will be lost. The gadget also makes no further appearances after this level, making it no longer possible to obtain this gadget for the remainder of the game.

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]

Just like before, time warps are rare and are limited to being found in secrets or elsewhere. They are first obtained near the end of "A Smell Of Petroleum Prevails" before the big fight in the warehouse begins at the end of the level. The player can obtain more time warps when playing New Game+ mode.

Tactics[]

  • The time warp lasts a lot longer than other gadgets, making it especially useful for certain situations.
  • The time warp is most effective against a large horde of enemies right before they overwhelm the player. Once it's been activated, the player will be able to easily eliminate them.
  • It can also be useful in some levels when the player needs time to recover any lost health, armor or ammo while their companions can deal with any enemies in the area.

Trivia[]

  • The achievement related to the gadget, "Max Pain", is a play on the Max Payne series, which is famous for its use of bullet-time.
  • The other achievement, "That Belongs In A Museum", refers to a quote said by Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
  • The time warp bears a strong resemblance to the plasma grenade in Counter-Strike Online.
  • When Professor Kiesel requests that Sam bring the device back to him for his research, the two of them engage in a verbal sparring match which Sam ultimately wins.
