- "I went into this fight knowing I would probably die. And that's OK, if it's the price for saving the planet. But I wanted you to know, to remember, that I didn't give my life for a nation, or a race, or a religion. I joined because I like people. Ordinary human beings of every type and flavor. Not presidents and generals, not even artists and geniuses. Just ordinary old dumbass human beings, doing their thing. That's it. That's enough. Remember that."
- ―Jones tells his reasons for joining the EDF[src]
Thomas Jones (commonly referred to by just his last name) was a soldier who served in the Earth Defense Force, and a member of general Howard Brand's Alien Artifact Acquisition team. He appears as a supporting character in Serious Sam 4.
He is not to be confused with his brother, a minor character who appears in Serious Sam 3: BFE.
Biography[]
Jones was born in Beaumont, Texas, on October 13th, 2079. Before the Mental War, he worked as a cook in a variety of restaurants up and down the Gulf of Mexico.[1]
In his adult years, he decided to enlist during the fight for the colonies, being the first in his family to do so. He was assigned into the Colonial Defense Force and the 22nd Spaceborne division, and fought in several battles, such as the Battle of Alpha Centauri, the Battle of Beijing, and the Fall of Orbital 7. An unknown amount of time after that, he enlisted in the Earth Defense Force, where met another soldier, Rodriguez, who became one of Jones's best friends. During his time in the EDF, he was picked by general Howard Brand to serve as a member of his Alien Artifact Acquisition team.[1]
Jones had a younger brother (first name unknown), who decided to follow in his older brother's footsteps and enlist in the EDF to fight against the alien invaders.[2]
Appearances[]
Serious Sam 4[]

Jones defending the EDF convoy on their way to the Vatican.
Jones, along with Sam, Rodriguez, Hellfire, and Kenny, are sent to Rome to rendezveous with Father Mikhail, a Russian priest who they believe has information on the whereabouts of the Holy Grail, which could turn the tides in humanity's favor and ultimately win in their fight against Mental.
On the way there, Hellfire warns the convoy about incoming Octanian Raiders, but it's too late, as the convoy are not able to react in time. The raiders drop a few bombs on them, destroying several vehicles, though Jones and the other members of the team make it out alive.[3] In the chaos, Hellfire, Jones and Rodriguez are separated from Kenny and Sam. Jones is later seen with Rodriguez fighting off a wave of aliens in the Piazza della Repubblica before Sam and Kenny arrive with Father Mikhail. They all fight off more waves of Mental's forces before a Saggitarian Sidewinder suddenly bursts from under the ground. Jones lends Sam Hellfire's minigun, and Sam kills it.[4]
Once the fight is over, Hellfire appears in a bus and extracts the team to an Earth Defense Force base outside of Rome. There, they meet up with EDF general Howard Brand and Signal Corps officer Quinn in the briefing room to discuss how to safely get to the Vatican Library without being attacked by more Octanian Raiders.[5] Carter suggests using the HAARP to force Mount Vesuvius to erupt. The plan is set in motion, and Jones and the team head to Pompeii to plant the beacons. Once in Pompeii, Jones converses with Rodriguez and the rest of the team, joking around about things such as Hellfire's relationship with Sam.
Once Jones finishes setting up the first beacon, he updates his team on the situation. He then proceeds to plant the second beacon, where he encounters heavy enemy activity before he suddenly goes quiet. This arouses suspicion from both Quinn and Rodriguez, who ask Sam to go to the amphitheater, which is where his beacon is giving off a signal. Suspicious, Sam checks it out.

Jones is captured by a Khnum.
Upon arriving at the amphitheater, Sam is shocked at the sight of a Khnum. Upon confronting the massive beast, he discovers that the creature is holding something in its clutches; Jones and his beacon. Sam is surprised at the sight, and the Khnum reacts by devouring Jones alive and killing him. The Khnum also ends up swallowing the beacon. [5] Enraged, Sam defeats the Khnum in a fight, rendering the beast incapacitated. Sam, annoyed at the fact that an alien had to kill one of his best friends, tells the Khnum that he now has to inform Jones's younger brother that "some damn alien killed Tom". Sam, using a combat knife, tears open the Khnum's stomach and drags the beacon out. Then, without showing any hesitation or mercy, shoves the beacon straight through the Khnum's skull, killing it and avenging Jones's death.[5]
Once the mission is over and after Sam and the team, minus Jones, barely escape Pompeii with their lives (after General Brand decides to give the green light to hastily activate the HAARP before the team could safely get out of the area), Sam assaults Brand and demands to know what happened, seeing as he just lost of one of his close friends. Brand explains that being a leader means having to make tough calls, even if casualties occur in the process. While Brand accepts the loss of Jones being an indirect result of his poor planning, he also demands the respect that comes with being a general.[6]
Jones is mentioned by Rodriguez as he and Sam head back into Rome, still in shock and disbelief over his death. A broadcast by Bill Corwin can be heard on the radios found throughout the next few levels posthumously mentioning Jones. A message from Jones is played at his request, in the event of his death, on Radio Free Earth as a sign of respect to him and everyone else whose lives were lost during the war on Mental.[7][8]
Jones, along with Father Mikhail and Kenny, is remembered by Rodriguez as he and the rest of his team share a toast in memory of their fallen friends.[9]
Appearance[]
Jones was an African-American man in his early thirties with shaved black hair. He had a striking resemblance to his younger brother, albeit looking slightly older.
In combat, Jones wore the standard EDF uniform with a camo jacket, bulletproof vest, combat pants and black boots. He was often seen wielding his signature assault rifle.
Personality and skills[]
Prior to becoming a member of the Earth Defense Force, Jones was a talented cook, and excelled in his profession. His favorite food to prepare was tamales with Oaxaca cheese and Centauran Hyperchilies.[1] After enlisting in the EDF, he became one of their best soldiers, and was proficient in the use of firearms and skills on the battlefield. General Brand was impressed with his talents, and chose him to be a part of his personal Alien Artifact Acquisition team. In combat situations, he was often paired with Rodriguez, to whom he formed an ideal counterweight.[1]
Jones had a calm and collected personality, though he was a rather quiet person and was rarely heard engaging in conversation. When he did talk, it was often in short or brief sentences, and also the occasional one-liner. He would, however, talk with his friends on occasions.[5] His quiet nature was mentioned several times by a few of his friends, especially Rodriguez. He was noted for keeping calm even under extreme circumstances, a trait he says that he developed while working as a sous-chef in a popular restaurant in Havana, Cuba.
On a radio broadcast played after his death, Jones said that he joined the Earth Defense Force solely to fight for humanity, and not to fight for "presidents or generals, even artists or geniuses", but just for the sake of being human and fighting as a species to protect his beloved planet.[7][8]
Relationships[]
Sam Stone[]
He was one of Sam's best friends. Although Jones was the most silent out of the bunch, he had a good relationship with Sam. Jones and Sam liked to exchange a few words, one-liners, and even joked while on missions.
After seeing Jones being eaten by a Khnum, this enraged Sam. During his fight with the beast, Sam was furious, remarking that "I do not like my friends being eaten by monsters" throughout the battle with the Khnum, which showed how close his relationship was with Jones.[5] He was also frustrated with having to tell his brother that he got eaten by an alien. To avenge Jones, he shoved the transmitter beacon right through the creature's skull. He also made a promise to himself to tell Jones' younger brother what happened to Tom and what Sam proceeded to do to the Khnum after the "damn alien" ate him.[5]
Dwayne Rodriguez[]

Rodriguez was Jones' best friend and they had a close relationship. He was seen with Jones the most out of everyone on the team. They would often exchange one-liners with each other and joke around, even when they were in a combat situation.
Rodriguez was the first of the Triple-A team to worry about Jones' whereabouts on the mission on planting the beacons in Pompeii, and just like Sam and the rest of the team, he became both angry and upset after discovering what happened to Jones. On their way to Rome, Rodriguez lamented to Sam that he still couldn't believe Jones was dead, stating that he was and strong and capable fighter.
Fiona Starr aka "Hellfire"[]
Not much was known about the two, though they had been fought in several military engagements together. She is one of Jones's companions and one of the best and skilled members of the Triple-A team. Being a skilled pilot, Hellfire was always available to extract Jones and the rest of the team out of the area if it was being overrun with enemy forces.
Kenneth Orkanti[]

Jones lecturing Kenny on what it takes to be part of the Triple-A team.
Compared to the other members in the Triple-A team, Jones had a more neutral relationship towards Kenny. This was most likely because he was the newest recruit among the team. After Kenny made a 'one-liner' when a Gnaar appeared and spooked him, Jones berated him, telling him that he has to "survive with style" if he has what it takes to be a part of the team.
Trivia[]
- He can be selected as a player model in the multiplayer game settings in both Serious Sam 4 and Siberian Mayhem.
- He claims he once saw Rodriguez killing a Gnaar with his butt.[10]
- According to Quinn, Jones was a good listener and helped to "keep the team on track", despite his quiet nature.[10]
