The Steps of Despair is the final level of the Bright Island campaign in Serious Sam Classics: Revolution.
Plot[]
Escaping from Bright Island is just within reach now, but new problems arise. The quantum energy released by the activation of the Astral Engine is not only powering the portal Sam needs to be able to leave, but it has also triggered enough seismic activity to awaken the dormant volcano. Even worse, the elemental energies are threatening to tear the entire island apart, so if Sam doesn't escape quickly, it will soon cease to exist and him along with it.
Sam must fight his way to the portal and defeat colossal versions of the four elemental golems before he can enter the portal. And as if things weren't bad enough, the quantum energy released by the Astral Engine has fused with the elemental energies on the island and created a powerful new threat, which is now standing as the final obstacle in Sam's way to salvation.
Secrets[]
- On the second level while ascending the stairs you will be blocked by a large gate and have to head through the small residential area next to you to unlock it. Of the four houses facing the right pressure plate, enter through the door of the single house closest to the entrance back where you came from. You may need to get the right angle. Inside is a crudely drawn concept art for the final level. Interact with it to register the secret.

Trivia[]
- If the player did go to "Tropical Bluffs", NETRICSA's first quote will change to "It seems we are still in time! No more bogus detours! The activation of the Astral Engine have caused massive seismic activity around the island, triggering the eruption of its volcano.", referencing Serious Sam's Bogus Detour.
- The music in this level is reused from the second half of the Serious Sam: Xbox rendition of the "Land of the Damned" level, 'Lava Caves'.
- The final boss reuses "Gladiator (Instrumental)", an instrumental rearrangement of "The Gladiator" by Undercode for Serious Sam 3: BFE, which is also used for the Adult Arachnoid in "Into the Spider's Nest" and the Alcor Class Warship in the Serious Sam Fusion version of "The Power of the Underworld".
