"The Guardians of the Gate" (also called "The Guardian's Gate") is the thirty-fifth level of Serious Sam: Next Encounter.

Plot[]

Now that Sam has made it through the geothermal vents, he must find a way through the gates the guard the Atlantean royal family. NETRICSA can't seem to find a way to open the gates, but she believes there is a possible route through a maintenace room that gains access to the mechanism that power the statues. For the time being, Sam must take out any opposing forces and make his way towards the gates.

Data[]

These huge gates bar entrance to the Royal chambers of Atlantis. I can find very little information on what lies beyond them, but what data I can find suggests that you should steer yourself for the bizarre. The gates themselves are guarded by two giant statues, the Earth Guardians. Modelled after two mythical figures who appear in Atlantean folklore who had their gills removed for crimes against the rulers of Atlantis, they are trapped in an eternal vigil, guarding the Atlantean Royal family. I can see no way to open the gates, but am researching a possible maintenance access to the mechanisms within the statues. For now eliminate local resistance and head toward the gates.

Head Games
Within the remaining head there is a steam lock which when correctly aligned will release a valve and rotate the statue's head, providing a convenient jump off point to the top of the gates. From there you should be able to find a small access point allowing you to pass through the gates.

Secrets[]

  1. The trick to this secret lies in those two health pills suspended above the centrally located lava pit. Walk around the pit until you can line up the two pills in the center of your screen; the tunnel that led you here should be to the left of your crosshairs. Move forward, and you'll be on an invisible catwalk. Keep moving forward until you suddenly drop, and when gravity takes effect, lay off the thumb stick. Within seconds, you'll land onto one of the piece of treasure lying on the bull's-eye target. There you'll find 8 treasure artifacts (16,000 points), liquid nitrogen, laughing gas, limpet grenades and spider mines. Be sure to grab everything before returning to the main path, as it'll be difficult to find the invisible catwalk a second time without dying.
  2. When you reach the catwalk that leads you to the top of the guardian statues - the one that still has its head - look on one of the stalactites for a bull's-eye target. Shoot it, and three pieces of treasure (15,000 points) will materialize in the final room you'll have to enter.

Treasure[]

  1. There is a Serious Bomb on the left between the distant blue rocks.
  2. Ascend all the way to the top of the spiralling path and use the Serious Skates located there. With this added boost of speed, run downward on this path about until you find yourself under a blue rock on the ceiling. Get a running start and, at the last possible moment, jump toward the large stalactite hanging from the roof. If you see gravity going crazy on you, then you'll descent onto the spherical boulder hovering in the center of the chamber. As you land, the single most valuable piece of treasure in the game will appear on the rock (25,000 points). Be warned that the screen will go haywire on you at this point.
  3. At the top, when you have to jump for the first head, there is a treasure artifact on the left (2000 points).
