The Swamp Hive is an enemy that first made its appearance in Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope. It is later reintroduced into Serious Sam 4, where it appears as a boss in both games.

Overview[]

The Swamp Hive is a massive pink and green spider-like creature that has been genetically modified by Mental. The creature its genetic code is based on was a smaller (but still large for Earth standards) crustacean-like organism that lived in the rainforests on the planet Valtos, where its long legs allowed it to reach sources of food high up in the canopy.[1]

Appearances[]

Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope[]

The Swamp Hive serves as the boss of the planet Valtos. It is fought on the final level, Green Dream.

Serious Sam 4[]

The Swamp Hive is summoned by Lord Achriman as part of a last-ditch attempt to dispose of Sam in the Colosseum in Rome, in the level Morituri Te Salutant.

Behavior and skills[]

As it has been genetically modifed by Mental, the Swamp Hive is an extremely large creature with incredible endurance, and is able to withstand a ton of damage before it can be killed. These modifications have also made the creature aggressive, and has also become hybridized to produce hosts of other hostile alien species, such as the Zubenhakrabian Spider.[1]

As the creature has high health points and is very durable, small-arms fire is ineffective against it, although powerful weapons, like a rocket launcher, can make quick work of the creature.

The Swamp Hive's behavior is different depending on what game it appears in.

Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope[]

The Swamp Hive has two attacks, hitting the player with its legs and spawning small flying creatures called Beetles. The fight with it consists of two phases, and in each phase, it will move away and enemies will attack the player. After the final phase is finished, the Swamp Hive will continue attacking the player until it or the player is killed. When the Swamp Hive has been killed, it will fall into the water.

Serious Sam 4[]

During the fight, the Swamp Hive will lift one of its legs up in the air and shake it, releasing multiple Adult Zubenhakrabian Spiders and Zubenhakrabian Spider Nymphs and piles of green slime, which spawns the Adult Spiders. Once it's done that, it will then use one of its legs to smash it into the ground, releasing a shockwave that can cause a lot of damage to the player should it hit them.

Tactics[]

Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope[]

  • The Swamp Hive has a large amount of health. Strong weapons such as the A-24 Devastator and XPML21 Rocket Launcher are recommended to use against it.
  • If the player can’t use the aforementioned weapons, the XM214-A Minigun and XL2 Lasergun will also do the job.
  • The rocket launcher and minigun are a great combination to use against the Swamp Hive as well.
  • The Swamp Hive’s melee attack can be avoided by using the Shield.

Serious Sam 4[]

  • Despite the Swamp Hive's huge size, it is fairly easy boss compared to the other bosses in the game.
  • Make sure to have plenty of gadgets such as L.I.F.E.s, Rage Serums or Time Warps. Without them, this will make the fight much harder.
  • It helps to have the companion orb in this fight as well. It can deal with the Spiders whilst the player is focusing on the Swamp Hive.
  • The Swamp Hive's shockwave attack can be avoided by strafing sideways or jumping.
  • Strong or rapid-fire weapons like the Autoshotgun, M29 Infantry Assault Rifle, MK III Grenade Launcher or the rocket launcher work well against the Swamp Hive, especially with rage serum active.

Trivia[]

  • The music used in The Guardian of Time ("FinalBattle") is reused during the fight against the Swamp Hive in Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope.
  • Despite being based on a crustaceous-like organism, the Swamp Hive resembles more of a sea spider in appearance, which are marine arthropods related to arachnids.
