The sledgehammer is an ordinary sledgehammer that is used as a melee weapon. In Serious Sam 3 and the VR version of the game, the weapon has three separate attacks: a swift downward swing that, if enemies are close together in front of you, can kill/damage multiple enemies at once; a horizontal right-to-left swipe that can take out several enemies at a time; and by pressing the reload key, a spinning swing that can clear multiple enemies within close proximity all around the player. Each attack has a varying speed of execution, with the downward and spinning swing taking slightly more time to initiate.
When the player is not around enemies, performing swings will take much more time. However when in close proximity to hostiles, the player will automatically raise the sledgehammer above their head, making swings much quicker to deliver.
There are two varieties of sledgehammers in Serious Sam 3; one with a wooden haft, and one made entirely of metal which is obtained late in the campaign. They are identical in statistics, and performance.
Despite being a melee weapon, the amount of attacks the sledgehammer has makes it a versatile choice for clearing multiple weak enemies in groups, making it significantly more useful than the combat knife from previous games. It is also the only weapon the player can use while sprinting at the same time.
In Serious Sam: Tormental, the player can switch to the sledgehammer by pressing the scroll button key. The player can also buy power-ups from the shop in Sea of Thought to upgrade the sledgehammer and increase its power.
The sledgehammer is obtained in Summer in Cairo, in the building to the left of where Sam falls out of the helicopter. An additional sledgehammer can be found as a secret in the same area as a 'parkour secret'.
The sledgehammer spawns in one of two locations in the first level, Knee Deep in Sand. The first location is near a beach on the eastern part of the map, and the second spawn is next to a lake opposite a pyramid.
The sledgehammer appears again in Path of Feast / Fear in a wooden crate after Sam loses all of his weapons upon being stranded on a beach.
It is not very effective against large or tougher enemies, such as Adult Arachnoids, Major Bio-mechanoids or Scrapjacks, especially considering the fact that Scrapjacks have a powerful melee attack that does a lot of damage. Reserve using the sledgehammer on these stronger enemies just to finish them off after weakening them.
The weapon shouldn't be used against explosive enemies, such as Beheaded Kamikazes, for obvious reasons.
