"You see, Sirians left a back-up device for travelling to distant galaxies, if something happened to the original "SSS Centerprice" Well, SOMETHING happened!"
NETRICSA to Sam[src]

The Sirian backup spaceship is a spacecraft that was constructed by the Sirians to serve as a 'backup vehicle' in the event of an emergency if something were to happen to the SSS Centerprice.[1] Appearing in Serious Sam: The Second Encounter, it serves an important purpose in the campaign.

Overview[]

The spaceship is a conventional-looking spacecraft that was made by the Sirians. In the classic version of the game, the rocket has a red color on the bow and several red rings on its fuselage, and four booster blocks and four tail ridges. In Serious Sam HD, the rocket has received a major design overhaul and has been given a more modern look with a monolithic body. In addition, two more accelerating blocks have been added to the rocket, which, however, still give weak acceleration.[2]

Performance-wise, the rocket has terrible acceleration: during the ending cutscene, the rocket can be seen slowly taking off from the cathedral, which indicates that the rocket is powered by rather weak engines.[2]

History[]

The spaceship was made by the Sirians sometime during the Middle Ages to serve as a backup plan in case their original transport, the SSS Centerprice, was destroyed.[1] Like the SSS Centerprice, the rocket needed a special item for it to activated (in this case, the Holy Grail). The rocket was hidden inside the Church of Sacred Blood, a cathedral located somewhere in Eastern Europe.

Appearances[]

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter[]

A cutscene shows a Croteam Crate Bus colliding with the SSS Centerprice after its 'hypercrate' mode malfunctions.[3] The damage caused by the wreck forces Sam to crash-land the spaceship in Sierra Madre de Chiapas, a mountain range in Mexico. Witb no other ship for Sam to use, it would seem that all hope is lost. Luckily, NETRICSA tells Sam that the Sirians made another ship in case something happened to the original one.[1] However, as the ship is in another time period, the Sirians had a solution to the problem: they left a time portal with each great human civilization so someone can get to the same time period that the ship is in. To activate the ship however, she mentions he will need to obtain the Holy Grail before they can depart to Sirius.

With Sam's main objective in mind, he embarks on a long journey through the time portals, the first in Teotihuacan and another one in Persepolis, until he makes it to medieval Europe. He finds out that the Holy Grail was hidden by the Arc-Al-Magi, a clan affiliated with the Sirians, and had placed it inside the Grand Cathedral. Mental, having already anticipated this, had one of his evil servants, Mordekai the Summoner, guard the Grail. Sam kills him and, now that the last of his obstacles has been eliminated, goes into the cathedral and obtains the Holy Grail. He then makes a 'confession' to Mental for killing his troops. Sometime after, Sam activates the spaceship, and makes his way to Sirius to end Mental once and for all.

Trivia[]

  • In the original version of the game, while the credits are rolling, the camera will gradually move away from the start point and move back. Having reached the farthest point, Croteam Heads can be seen cheering Sam on as he departs to Sirius.
  • The initial speed provided by the spaceship to several accelerating blocks is too low to be able to break away from the Earth's orbit. If this were to happen in real-life, the rocket would fall back down and collapse into the church. Considering this, it is unknown how fast the rocket travels once it enters space.
  • In Serious Sam HD, the spaceship has the NASA logo on its body, along with many flags of different countries.
