The Sign of Amon-Ra is an important item that makes its appearance in Serious Sam: The First Encounter. It was a highly valuable artifact that plays a major role in the latter and was needed for Sam's mission for departing to the planet Sirius.

Overview[]

The Sign of Amon-Ra was a valuable item that once belonged to the people of Thebes. It also had a connection to the Sirians, and was used for summoning the SSS Centerprice to Egypt, as well as preparing the boarding process for the ship.[1]

History[]

The Sign of Amon-Ra was originally kept by the Thebans in Luxor. They used this artifact to remain in contact with the Sirians. To call them, the people of Thebes would perform a ritual; this involved the Amon-Ra sign and would activate a rising obelisk, which would trasmit a signal to the SSS Centerprice.[2] Once the Sirians received the signal, they would come down from the skies in their ship and fly it over the Great Pyramid of Giza, iluminating it with a beam of light. After that, they would fly back up into space.

The riot[]

Main article: Riot of Thebes

As the city of Thebes began to rise into power, the rulers of Memphis attempted to influence power and religion over the people of Thebes, but were unsuccessful in doing so. As a result, the Memphis leaders staged a massive riot and stole the Sign of Amon-Ra, which they sealed away within the Temple of Ptah deep within Memphis.[3] As the sacred item belonging to the Thebans was lost, they were never able to contact the Sirians again.

Shortly after the riot, a religious cult consisting of priests, who called themselves the "Children of Amon-Ra", stole the Amon-Ra item and gave it to a "Ram-God" as part of a sacrifice.[4] This "Ram-God" was kept captive inside a sacred building called the Grand Obelisk, where it would be fed animal and human sacrificies to appease it.[5]

While the Memphis leaders were successful in stealing the Amon-Ra from the Thebans, they didn't actually know what the Sign of Amon-Ra was for, let alone how to use it.[6] Furthermore, the aftermath of the riot was felt throughout the entire city of Thebes, with the Thebans having lost both a precious artifact and a part of their culture. As a consequence of the riot, they sealed the city off from the rest of Egypt, and cut off contact with Memphis. The aftermath of this sparked the beginning of the end of the Egyptian Empire.[3]

Serious Sam: The First Encounter[]

The Amon-Ra item plays a significant role in the plot in The First Encounter. After collecting all four elements, Sam learns from NETRICSA that their is an important item kept inside the Temple of Ptah in Memphis.[7] As it is crucial for his mission, he is forced to fight his way through Mental's forces and traps that were laid by the Memphis leaders near the temple.

Making his way to the temple, Sam finds out that the Amon-Ra item was not in the temple at all, but instead it was taken somewhere in the Grand Obelisk by the Children of Amon-Ra. After clearing his way through the city, Sam finally reaches the obelisk, but finds out that there is a "Ram-God" in possession of it and wearing it as a necklace.[5] After Sam kills the beast, he takes the Amon-Ra item and makes his way to Thebes, where he uses the artifact to get the SSS Centerprice to Earth.

With the spaceship on its way, NETRICSA tells Sam that it will arrive at the Great Pyramid. Getting there won't be easy, though, as Mental is already aware of Sam's intentions. To stop Sam from boarding the ship, he sends his Great Admiral, Ugh-Zan III, to kill him. As Sam is no match for this massive creature, he rushes into the Great Pyramid and activates the ship's systems with the Shrine of Amon-Ra. He places it on a pedestal and makes his way to the top of the pyramid, where he encounters Ugh-Zan once again.

Serious Sam's Bogus Detour[]

The Sign of Amon-Ra makes a brief appearance at the start of the game, as the game begins when Sam picks it up in the Temple of Ptah. However, it does not actually serve a practical use in his journey here, and merely provides a large amount of experience points.
