The Octanian Legionnaire is a tough, armored enemy exclusive to Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem. It is a challenging and more formidable version of the Octanian Zealot introduced in Serious Sam 4.
Overview[]
The Octanian Legionnaire belongs to a species of polyp-controlled humanoid creatures originating from the Sigma Octantis system. They have allied themselves with Mental as part of their holy goal to eradicate all knowledge from the universe.[1]
Legionnaires form a special heavy-infantry unit of the Octanian Zealot army. Unlike most of their brethren, Legionnaires are armed with a short one-handed mace and carry large wooden shields that offer additional protection from any frontal attacks. The plethora of superstitions and stigmas that permeate Octanian culture also affect the Legionnaires, who believe their shields to be sacred tools and that losing one's shield is akin to losing the divine blessing of the Eightfold Manifestation.
Application[]
Legionnaires provide additional support to regular soldiers and push back the enemy line with their heavy armor and shields. They can easily harass and overwhelm the player when they are dealing with other enemies or don't have the correct weaponry to deal with them.
Appearances[]
Legionnaires are first encountered in Siberiade after Sam talks to One-Eyed Olga for the first time. They are encountered as uncommon enemies later on, often appearing with weaker enemies.
Like other tough enemies, Legionnaries are more common when playing on New Game+.
Behavior and skills[]
The Octanian Legionnaire behaves similarly to its weaker counterpart, the Zealot, as it runs towards the player and attacks them with its mace. However, they are stronger than Zealots and the shield they carry grants them stronger protection, with it being able to protect them from explosives and XPMR "Burner" Raygun rays. However, they still can be damaged from the front with TCC-2 "Perun" Crossbow bolts and SBC Cannon cannonballs, and also cannot withstand a direct blast from a C-4 Demolition Charge (if C-4 is placed next to the Legionnaire rather than directly on them, however, then they have a chance to survive the blast). Like Zealots, its back is exposed, which can allow the player to attack it with normal weapons from behind between its attacks.
Riding[]
Legionnaires can be ridden by the player if they have unlocked the "Rodeo Time" skill in the S.A.M skill tree. This can be achieved by pressing the Use (E
) key when prompted after approaching the Legionnaire from behind. The same controls for using a vehicle and other mountable enemies apply when riding the Legionnaire, and the player can use its weapon by pressing the primary fire key.
Tactics[]
- Like Zealots, the player should sidestep to avoid its attacks.
- The Double Barrel Coach Gun is effective against lone to small groups of Legionnaires. It takes 2 shots to kill them if all pellets connect.
- It may be tempting to use rapid-firing weapons such as the XM214-A Minigun or XL2 Lasergun against Legionnaires, but this is actually a waste of ammo. It is best to fire at their heads or at their feet below their shields when using these weapons to ensure that they are damaged.
- The TCC-2 "Perun" Crossbow is very effective against Legionnaires, since it penetrates through their shields and deals a good amount of damage to them. A headshot will instantly gib a Legionnaire.
- The SBC Cannon is another good choice of weapon for dealing with groups of Legionnaires, as it has more than enough piercing power to bypass their shields.
- If the player is running low on crossbow bolts or cannonballs, C-4 Demolition Charges are also effective against Legionnaires. A single explosive is powerful enough to decimate a group of them if they are packed closely together. Be sure to aim the C-4 at their shield or at their feet rather than a few feet away from them for maximum effectiveness.
- Compared to other enemies, Legionnaires should be treated as medium-priority targets. When playing on Serious difficulty, they should be considered high-priority threats and eliminated as soon as possible.
- When riding a Legionnaire, the player can use the Legionnaire's mace to deal heavy damage to nearby enemies.
Trivia[]
- Like the Zealot, the Legionnaire is based on a type of heavy infantry dating back to the Roman Empire.
- The Legionnaire is also based on the Roman Legionary; professional heavy infantrymen that served in the Roman army. Like Legionnaires, they carried large shields that covered about half of their body.
