The Mental Thought is the final boss of Serious Sam: Tormental.

Overview

The Mental Thought is the source of all of Mental's cruel ideas and sinister plots, making it one of if not the most important process inside of Mental's mind. This also makes it the most vulnerable part of his psyche, hence why it is protected by the Vault and the entrance guarded by a fragment of Tah-Um himself.

Sam encounters this monstrosity after collecting 32 Vault Keys and unlocking the ideas Mental locked away inside his own mind, making him powerful enough to open the Cerebral Gateway where the Mental Thought resides. He fights against it in the hopes of giving his real self back on Earth enough time to reach the Time-Lock before the Moon Mental pulled out of its orbit can hit the planet.

Destroying it does indeed give the real Sam the opportunity to travel back into the past, but proves to only be a minor inconvenience to Mental himself. This version of Sam will forever be trapped inside the mad god's mind, who is not too happy about the predicament either.

Tactics

• Once the Cerebral Gateway is unlocked, the Mental Thought can be fought any time player reaches the Vault in any given run. This means that, unlike the other bosses in the game, the player is free to fight the Mental Thought any time they feel ready.
• The Mental Thought has no attacks of its own, only able to damage the player if they run into him. The real threat comes from the endless enemy waves that it constantly spawns. Every wave corresponds to the enemies encountered in each main area: "Mental Woods", "Sea of Thoughts", "Nightmare Caves", "Mount Fury" and "Fortress", in that order.
• The battle takes place in an infinite corridor surrounded by black fog. The Mental Thought will try to keep distance from the player, so by moving closer to it the player can force the slower monsters it summons into the black fog at the bottom, which kills them instantly. This is not always advisable however, since the Mental Thought will spawn new enemies to replace them.
• The blue chest before the boss fight will always contain the Ultra Serious Cannon, which is incredibly useful to thin enemy numbers in a pinch. Always pick it up.

Behind the scenes

• In the development versions of the final update, the Mental Thought was only half the size it is in the release version. This was done to make the boss more threatening in appearance.

Trivia

• The track used for the boss fight is an instrumental version of "Hero" from Serious Sam 3: BFE.
• The Mental Thought will always be treated as being more advanced than the loop it is fought in. Fighting it directly from the hub will put it at its weakest, while fighting it from the first loop will make it V2, V3 in the second loop and so on.
