The Megalopolyp is a massive tentacled creature composed of Polyps. It is fought in the final level set in Rome and serves as that level's boss, and the campaign's fifth boss overall. It serves as an antagonist in Serious Sam 4.

Overview[]

The Megalopolyp is an enormous tentacled creature assembled from millions of tiny organisms called Protopolyps. It has three eyes, one in the center of its head and two on the sides, along with a large gaping mouth. Whether its creation was the result of a directed plan, or simply an accident caused by the deployment of a critical mass of Protopolyps, remains unclear.[1] It was reponsible for infesting the streets of Rome with the tentacles that are seen in the early levels.

Appearances[]

The Megapolyp is fought in Machina Ex Deus shortly after Sam acquires the popemobile.

Behavior and skills[]

Considering the size of the Megalopolyp, it was extremely hard to kill without the use of heavy weaponry, such as an Earth Defense Force mech. The player's normal weapons will barely leave a dent in the creature. The creature's body was impervious to small-arms fire, although its face served as a weak spot. Its face could only be damaged when its tentacles were not covering it.

During the boss fight, the Megalopolyp will uses its tentacles as its primary attack. At far range, it will pick up and hurl random debris, such as cars, at the player, or use its tentacles to attack the popemobile at close to medium range. The vehicles tossed by the creature can deal a lot of damage to the mech, and quickly drain its health if the player isn't paying proper attention.

Halfway during the fight, the Megalopolyp will cover its face and become invulnerable to damage and enemies, such as Beheaded Kamikazes and Octanian Gamma Troopers, will spawn. Once a certain amount of time passes, its face will be revealed again and the creature will be rendered vulnerable.

Tactics[]

  • The mech is needed for this fight, so if the mech is destroyed, the player will die.
  • Its face is its one weakness, so the player should fire at it whenever they get the opportunity.
  • Its tentacles can be avoided by strafing left or right in the mech whilst dashing, or by shooting at them. The same can be said for when dealing with the debris it throws during the fight.
  • The Technopolyps that spawn during the boss fight are the most dangerous support enemies due to their missiles, so take them out while the Megalopolyp is not attacking.
  • Use the mech's rocket launcher against this enemy for as long as possible, and use its miniguns to fend off its tentacles and to take down any debris it throws at the mech.
    • The miniguns are also effective for taking down any enemies that spawn in the arena during the fight.

Powers and abilities[]

  • Immense Durability and Endurance: The Megalopolyp was one of the toughest enemies seen in the series, and had one of the highest hitpoints of any boss (125,000 HP). As such, conventional weapons barely had any effect on the creature. The only known way to take the beast down was with an EDF mech and its powerful weapons.
  • Tentacle Control: The creature was capable of manipulating and controlling tentacles to a certain extent. It could use its tentacles as weapons which it would use to attack the Popemobile, or for shielding its face during combat. Its tentacles were extremely strong, and were powerful enough to chuck large containers and vehicles from very far distances. It could also use its tentacles to create almost impenetrable barriers that, while they can be destroyed, require a ton of firepower to break down, even with the absurdly powerful weapons of a mech.
  • Massive Size: The Megalopolyp was enormous, and was as large at the Vatican Library itself. Considering its huge mass, Sam was forced to deal with the creature in a mech. However, the creature's large size offered more disadvantages than benefits, though, as it made it an easy target to open fire on.
  • Invulnerability: The Megalopolyp demonstrated the ability to render itself invulnerable to damage by shielding its face with its tentacles. It could only do this momentarily, however, and before long it opened its face again, allowing Sam to finish it off for good.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Early sketches of the Megalopolyp depict a large, tentacled creature in a random assortment of shapes, including the ability to manifest appendages that resemble arms.[2] This is not seen in the final design.
  • An early concept of the mech shows it growing a large, tentacled limb that resembles the Megalopolyp's tentacles. It is believed that this form of mech was going to be a boss that would appear in Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem at one point.

Trivia[]

  • The Megalopolyp bears a resemblance to the Malboro, a strange, tentacled plant-like creature from the Final Fantasy series.
