"Machina Ex Deus" is the eighth level of Serious Sam 4.
Plot[]
Now closer to his goal, the Vatican Library, Sam receives help from a gun-toting old lady, who provides him with directions to the Vatican, but she says he must first the "Papamobile", which will help him on his mission. While skeptical at first, Sam decides to check out this new ride, in the hope that it will help him get to the Vatican Library, where a massive tentacled monster awaits him.

After helping Nonna you must proceed to the Vatican Library and retrieve the document Father Mikhail is looking for. But the deeper you get in the city, the more polyp-infested it gets. Probably nothing to worry about.

- Near the Earth Defense Force fortification next to the park.
Secrets[]
- At your starting point, head down the staircase on your left past the sandbags. Continue until you get under the bridge. There is a Holodecoy there.
- From #1, go back to the stairs, but instead of going up, keep going down the river until you get to the end of the third bridge. If you keep going you'll eventually end up at some barricades. To the left of these barricades is a L.I.F.E. gadget.
- Across the bridge and past the point where you get the S.A.M, there are some barriers with a few beaten up cars. Go behind the car on the right to get a L.I.F.E. gadget.
- Make your way through the park until you get to a truck with a trailer attached to it and some tentacles sticking out of a building. Use the dumpster on your left to jump on top of the truck, then go to the end of the trailer, jump onto the small building. On your right is a Time Warp inside a lantern. Jump up onto the lantern to reach it.
- From the previous secret, jump over the wall to your left opposite the truck and make your way to the bridge on the right. Go around the bridge to find a ladder, which you can use to climb up to the area where you can find a L.I.F.E. gadget.
- From the truck, there are some sandbags next to a no entry sign. Jump up onto the sandbags and jump across onto the ledge. Once there, go on the AC unit and jump up to get a L.I.F.E. gadget.
- In the warehouse with the Octanian Gamma Troopers, instead of going left, head to the right part of the first room and use any of the objects there to jump onto the pile of crates. There is a L.I.F.E. gadget on top of them.

Trivia[]
- The name of this level is a play on the Latin phrase Deus ex machina which means 'god from the machine'. It is used as a plot device whereby an unexpected power or event occurs during a seemingly hopeless situation.
- During the cutscene when Sam is introduced to the Popemobile, "Virgo Serena", the title music of The Talos Principle (another Croteam game), can be heard.
