Legend of the Beast title.

Legend of the Beast is an expansion pack for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter developed by Croteam. It was released on May 15, 2012 and costs $4.99 USD (£3.94 for players in the UK) for purchase on the Steam store. It is also included in Serious Sam Fusion if the player owns the expansion.

Plot[]

The campaign consists of three levels and features Serious Sam looking for the "Ram-God" of The Grand Obelisk. The campaign takes place in ancient Egypt and is set in Memphis and the events that take place after the Metropolis level of Serious Sam: The First Encounter, but before the events of Alley of the Sphinxes.

It appears that the Sign of Amon-Ra wasn't in the Temple of Ptah in the metropolitan part of Memphis, but instead was taken somewhere in the Grand Obelisk by a religious cult who call themselves the "Children of Amon-Ra". Legend says that a beastly "Ram-God" roams the area, terrorizing the citizens and eating anyone who encounters him. After clearing his way through the city, Sam finally reaches the Obelisk, defeats the Ram-God, acquires the Sign of Amon-Ra from his neck, and continues with his journey.

The Legend of the Beast has three parts; a small campaign, three new versus levels, and one new survival level.

Additionally, the DLC also coincides with Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter's versus and survival modes going free to play. This includes Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Insta-Kill, Last Man Standing, Team Last Man Standing, and My Burden.

Reception[]

Legend of the Beast received mixed criticism.[1][2] It has received strong community backlash for the majority of what the pack offers, such as the campaign level designs, glitched enemy AI, lack of 'interesting' secrets (such as the "goofy" secrets that appear in Serious Sam: The Second Encounter), and a long delay before acquiring better weapons. An example of the latter would be that the player starts the mini-campaign with nothing but the knife and a single Colt and is forced to deal with multiple enemies and even tough ones like Adult Arachnoids before they reach a second Colt.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Croteam confirmed that in the game files, the 3 campaign levels "CityEnter", "CityMiddleYards", and "CityObeliskYard" are the first three levels from the Beta.

Trivia[]

  • Most of the enemies that appear in The Second Encounter, such as Cucurbito the Pumpkin and the Fiendian Reptiloid Demon, do not appear in the Legend of the Beast.
  • The Ram-God uses copyrighted stock music for his boss theme, which can cause gameplay footage of his boss fight to receive a copyright claim if uploaded to YouTube. To avoid this, the player must set the music volume to 0% before fighting the Ram-God if they wish to record gameplay footage.
