The Kleers are a species of aliens that appear throughout the Serious Sam franchise.
Biology[]
The Kleers were a primitive race of bipedal, mammalian creatures that lived on the planet Kleer, the third planet of the Sirius system. They were sentient and intelligent creatures and had a similar appearance to kangaroos due to their strong hind legs with hooves, which they used for jumping, while they used their long tail to balance.[1] Their heads have small, pointed horns and their bodies were covered in thick, soft fur. They also had strong muscles, which enabled them to run slightly faster than an adult human. They can also leap incredible distances and use their long, scythe-like claws to cling onto walls or for attacking enemies at close range.
After the Kleers were killed by Mental and reanimated as skeletons, their physiology hasn't changed much except for their obvious lack of skin and muscles. Even without having muscles to support them, they can still move at significant speed.
History[]
Before Mental attacked their planet, the Kleers lived a peaceful existence. The Sirians never bothered the Kleers and they just let them live their lives, and the Kleers never showed any desire to leave their planet or learn anything about technology. The Sirians had many other uninhabited planets that they planned to use, and therefore did not see the need for contact with the Kleers.[1]
When Mental attacked Sirius, he first attacked the Sirians and ignored the Kleers, as he saw them as harmless and benign. The Sirians contacted the Kleers for help, as the Sirian believed that the supernatural powers of the Kleers could help stop Mental. However, the Kleers were too selfless and happy on their planet to understand the complexity of the situation. Since they had never fought, the very idea of war was incomprehensible to them. Soon, Mental destroyed all of the Sirians, rendering the species extinct.5
When the Kleers finally realized what the last desperate cry for help from the Sirians meant, it was too late. Suddenly, they realized that they could not help the species. They ended up completely confused, began to enthusiastically argue about what they could do, why they did not do it, and why they were so blind in relation to the impending threat. Some began to speculate about how to avenge the Sirians, but the idea seemed so out of the ordinary that most did not understand what was meant by revenge. There was no such word in their lexicon. Most of the Kleers did not understand why Mental would attack them. The Kleers had no business with the Sirians, never bothered Mental or saw him as a threat.[1]
Using telepathy, Mental found out what the Kleers were thinking about. He didn't think they might actually attack him, but Mental was determined to wipe them out. He sent an automated military fleet to their planet, which dropped seven million tons of burning napalm into the evergreen forests, which set the entire planet ablaze. The Kleers had nowhere to run, some were burned on the spot, some tried to escape, but there was nowhere to hide. Everyone died, leaving behind only ash and mountains of bones. Since then, the planet of the Kleers remains a dark planet surrounded by a layer of thick smoke and dust that does not settle.
The ghosts of the Kleers still roamed the dead deserts of their planet and could never rest. And their remains laid under the burned forests, and would never see sunlight again. Mental's twisted mind spawned a brilliant idea; with so many bones and ghosts wandering around the planet, he decided it was great material for necromancy. So, using his high intellect, Mental resurrected the Kleers as skeletons to serve in his army. Since then, the skeletons from Kleers have been among Mental's most vicious servants. They are not alive, but making them die completely was not so easy. They do not care about anything other than the orders of their master, and they are ready to throw out their anger on anyone who Mental orders to attack.[1]
Powers and abilities[]
As Kleers had lived for millennia without the need for technology, they had developed supernatural abilities such as telekinesis, telepathy and the materialization of objects with the power of thought. They can also materialize a weapon consisting of two chainballs, which they use to toss at their targets.
Kleers are very fast and gallop at roughly the same speed as a horse, allowing them to get in close and attack them with their claws. The bones of Kleers are held together with magical links that makes them quite durable. However, these magical links are quite weak, and the skeleton can be shattered with a strong blow from a heavy object like a sledgehammer, sustained gunfire or explosives.
Culture[]
Kleers were the only intelligent race on their planet. Despite this, they lived in a world where they rejected innovation or making strides in technological advancement like other races, such as the Sirians or humans.
Kleers were a highly social species, and lived in large groups in forests. They had a rich culture, sang songs, danced and told each other stories of great hunts. Since they had no fingers, they couldn't perform tedious tasks that would involve the appendages, thus they didn't bother to build houses or write books. Nevertheless, Kleers were a very developed race, with a voluminous cultural heritage. The clerics considered hunting an art, and performed the use of their chainball ability according to a certain custom.
Trivia[]
- According to professor Gottlieb Kiesel, the demise of the Kleer was attributed to their primitive lifestyle and not opting for making any advancements in their use of technology.[2]
