The GP-25 Kostyer is a 40 mm under-barrel grenade launcher. It appears as a weapon upgrade for the 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun in Serious Sam 4 and its expansion pack, Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem.

Overview[]

The GP-25 serves as an upgrade and alternate fire mode for the pump-action shotgun.[1] It fires one grenade each time the secondary fire key is pressed. There is a slight delay after firing as, unlike the MK III Grenade Launcher, the weapon can only fire one grenade at a time and requires another round to be inserted into it before it can be fired again.

The grenades fired from the GP-25 deal roughly the same damage as a rocket, but have a smaller blast radius than other explosives, such as C-4 Demolition Charges and grenades fired by the MK III Grenade Launcher. Considering that it deals less damage than normal grenades, it may be not a suitable choice for engaging tough opponents unless the player has not yet acquired the grenade launcher or other strong weapons. As such, it is more efficient as a crowd-control weapon. However, like other weapons, grenades fired by the GP-25 will deal extra damage when they make contact with an enemy's weak spot (in most cases, the head), allowing for the player to land critical hits and finish off tough enemies with this weapon.

Appearances[]

Serious Sam 4[]

The grenade launcher is obtained from a weapons crate in the the third level of the campaign, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, after the player completes the "Thin Red Line" side objective. After this, the player gets to keep the upgrade after acquiring the shotgun again in The Package, but only if they completed the side objective during the same playthrough.

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]

The grenade launcher is obtained from a weapons crate in A Smell Of Petroleum Prevails, shortly before the first encounter with Processed Anthropolyps and Emetic Anthropolyps.

Tactics[]

  • The grenade launcher is very useful for taking out groups of weak enemies like beheaded soldiers, such as Beheaded Bombers, Beheaded Firecrackers, Beheaded Kamikazes, and Beheaded Rocketeers. It also works very well against groups of Processed Anthropolyps, Octanian Gamma Troopers, small groups of Kleer Skeletons, and lone Octanian Commanders.
  • When using the grenade launcher against Commanders, be sure to aim at their shields or next to their feet.
  • Grenades are great at taking down pursuing Technopolyps if the player is low on rockets or C-4 charges, but it takes more than five grenades to destroy one. Accuracy is also needed as they are positioned quite high above the ground.
  • The grenades are also extremely useful against swarms of Zubenhakrabian Spider Nymphs, as they are often released in large hordes and are the weakest enemies in the game.
  • Even though the grenades deal less damage than other explosives, they can still be used to wound or kill tough enemies like Common Aludran Reptiloids, Major Bio-mechanoids, Adult Arachnoids, and Sirian Werebulls, especially when they are shot in the head.
  • The grenade launcher's damage potential can be enhanced even further with a Rage Serum - one direct hit will instantly kill anything below an Adult Arachnoid.
  • As with other explosive weapons, the grenade launcher should not be used in close quarters due to the risk of self-damage.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Originally, the GP-25 couldn't be fired automatically after holding down the fire key. This has been fixed as of Update 1.06.

Trivia[]

  • Despite the GP-25 being compatible with the pump-action shotgun, in real life, it is designed for the AK family of assault rifles.
  • The grenade launcher weapon upgrade is similar to the Explosive Shot modification for the Combat Shotgun in DOOM (2016).
  • The GP-25's grenades use the same HUD ammo icon as the grenades from the MK III grenade launcher.
