The Kalopsy is a flying enemy that is first introduced in Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope. It makes another appearance in Serious Sam 4 and the standalone expansion pack Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem.

Overview[]

The Kalopsy is a strange flying creature that appears as a large floating brain with a mouth. It is an unusual alien lifeform whose origins are not known. It may be the result of an experiment or perhaps an creature found on some distant planet that has been modified to suit Mental's needs.[1] In Serious Sam 4 and Siberian Mayhem, the Kalopsy has a mechanical device on its back that allows the creature to propel itself around.

Application[]

Kalopsies usually serve as harassment units in combat situations. They usually spawn sparingly or in small groups.

Appearances[]

Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope[]

Kalopsies are uncommon enemies and don't often appear until the later stages of the game. They first appear in The Swamp and are usually encountered alone or in small groups.

Serious Sam 4[]

Kalopsies first appear in The Die is Cast. They are not encountered very often. When they do appear, it's usually sparingly or when a big fight begins. They become more common later in the game.

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]

Kalopsies first appear in The Song Of The Stormbringer, and then alone or in small groups, becoming slightly more numerous as the player progresses through the game.

Behavior and skills[]

The Kalopsy's behavior is unique in comparison to other enemies; when not engaged in combat, it may occasionally spawn 5 guided projectiles, but when shot at, it will continouly spawn such projectiles until its target is overwhelmed. If a Kalopsy's projectile hits the player, it will cause their screen to shake a bit and then return to normal. When a Kalopsy has been killed, it will explode and release a massive burst of projectiles.

In Serious Sam 4 and Siberian Mayhem, the Kalopsy can use the device mounted on its back to quickly reach the player upon spotting them.

Tactics[]

  • Kalopsies produce more and more projectiles every time they take a tick of damage. Because of this, the player should avoid using rapid-fire weapons such as the XL2 Lasergun, XM214-A Minigun, or XPMR "Burner" Raygun against them.
  • Weapons with a high damage per shot like the A-24 Devastator, Double Barrel Coach Gun, RAPTOR Sniper Rifle and TCC-2 "Perun" Crossbow work well against the Kalopsy.
  • The FRPCL is an effective but very risky choice of weapon against Kalopsies, as the high amount of damage the projectiles fired by the weapon deal against it will cause the Kalopsy to release dozens of its projectiles at the player, although said projectiles can be easily destroyed with the FRPCL's chainsaw mode.
  • As said before, the Kalopsy's projectiles can be shot down, which can be useful to avoid receiving damage.
  • Circle strafing seems to be the most effective way to dodge a Kalopsy's projectiles.
  • In The Last Hope, the Shield is very useful if the player can’t shoot the Kalopsy’s projectiles in time, as it can deflect them.
  • Kalopsies tend to chase the player when provoked by gunfire. They can't be outrun and can easily adjust to the player's movement speed, even if they are using a motorbike or riding a Sirian Werebull. The only way to get rid of them is to kill them.
  • Multiple Kalopsies can be taken down with the XPML21 Rocket Launcher (especially with the lock-on multi-rocket upgrade in Serious Sam 4). When using akimbo rocket launchers, it is recommended that the player try to predict where the Kalopsies are moving, as the Kalopsies can avoid the rockets.
  • When paired with other enemies, the Kalopsy is a medium-high priority target and should be one of the first enemies taken out because of the damage dealt by their acid projectiles, and the effect that causes the screen to shake can make it difficult to see the screen, as well as other enemies and projectiles.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Early Serious Sam 4 designs depict the Kalospy as a floating head of what appears to be a humanoid woman with red eyes.

Trivia[]

  • The Kalopsy distantly looks and behaves like the Cacodemon from the Doom series, which they might be partially inspired from.
    • It also resembles the Octabrain from the Duke Nukem series, another flying enemy that mostly consists of a brain with tentacles.
  • In The Last Hope, the Kalopsy noticeably changes colors, though it does not in Serious Sam 4.
  • In Serious Sam 4, the Kalopsy makes the sounds of its The Last Hope counterpart, while in Siberian Mayhem it has new sounds.
