The Elephant Gunner is an enemy that appears in Serious Sam: Next Encounter.

Overview

The Elephant Gunner is an Asian elephant that has been altered by Mental to serve in his army. It is equipped with a cannon on its snout, has armor plating around its entire body, and enhanced hearing and sight.

Appearances

Gunners only appear in Praetorian Camp and Under the Colosseum. In Praetorian Camp, four of them appear in the end of the level and in Under the Colosseum, two of them appear in tight corridors after passing through the bridge with spikes on the ground.

Behavior and skills

The Gunner's only attack is to fire a cannonball at its target. This cannonball is extremely lethal, capable of instantly killing a player in one hit regardless of armor and health, not unlike those fired by the Rotating and Static Cannons from Serious Sam: The Second Encounter and Raahloom, the Imposing Prototype from Serious Sam 3: BFE.

Tactics

• The Gunner's cannonballs are almost always a one-hit kill, making them extremely dangerous. However, they can be dodged by constantly strafing.
• Their cannonballs can bounce off of surfaces, so there's still a chance of being hit by a cannonball or being hurt from one exploding nearby even if the player managed to dodge it.
• If the player got the secret Serious Bomb in Praetorian Camp, it can be used to kill all the Gunners that appear in the end of the level.
• Elephant Gunners are very rare enemies, but when they do appear, they should be the first enemies targeted. Their cannonballs are incredibly deadly, which alone makes them a high-priority target.
• The XPML4000 Rocket Launcher and XM4000 Minigun work best against Gunners. They both deliver a constant steam of damage, allowing the player to to take down a Gunner while dodging or hiding from its cannonballs. An effective strategy is to use the homing ammo types of both weapons while hiding from the Gunner.

Trivia

• Sam's quote when he encounters an Elephant Gunner is a reference to the 1941 Disney film Dumbo, along with the eponymous character taking the form of an elephant who uses his ears to fly.
