The Dodour is an enemy that appears in Serious Sam: Tormental.
Overview[]
The Dodour is a large avian creature with a yellow beak, red body and two wings that it uses to fly. There are two variants, normal and elite.
After Mental's researchers discovered records of an ancient terran bird that supposedly had a lack of fear due to having no predators, Mental mistook this information for the creature being utterly ferocious and devious, immediately having his best troops scatter to find any tangible sample they could use to replicate the beast. While successful, it didn't take long for him to realize that it wasn't really ferocious at all, it just lacked intelligence and was very isolated from anything that would feast on it.[1]
Having had relied so heavily on this illusion, Mental was now cluttered with many thousands of the creatures that were still being incubated. Due to their low intelligence, they attempted to eat a stockpile of volatile ammunition as Mental tried to ration what to do with them. This artificial bravery and awkward hunger of theirs gave him an idea: load them full of explosives and send them straight at the enemy for an organic bombing run.
Appearances[]
Dodours only appear in "Mount Fury". An elite version exists that has a rare chance to appear the first time around, but becomes more common in "Mount Fury V2'" and "Mount Fury V3".
Behavior and skills[]
When the Dodour spots the player, its only attack is to launch an egg bomb at them from its mouth. These eggs will roll some distance and explode after a few seconds or when ignited from fire or lava, releasing a volley of bullets that travel in all directions. Like other large enemies, the Dodour's body will flash yellow when its health is low, allowing the player to perform a brutal kill on it. However, the Dodour will self-destruct after 3 seconds when in this state, so the player has to finish it off quickly. After the Dodour has been killed, two egg bombs will appear in its place and subsequently explode.
The elite Dodour is much tougher than its regular counterpart. It can also refill its health after being set on fire.
Tactics[]
- Because of the Dodour's attacks and high health, this can make them very dangerous enemies if left unchecked.
- Performing a brutal kill on this enemy is not really worth the risk of taking damage due to the fact that more egg bombs are released when the Dodour dies.
- Strong weapons like the Bomber, Grenade Launcher, Rocket or Serious Bomb are useful for clearing out any Dodours in the room. Strong mods for The Gun may also be effective on them if the player is able to get close to one.
- The player can avoid the Dodour's bombs by strafing or dashing away from them, or by deflecting them with the Sledgehammer,.
- Take cover behind any walls after their bombs go off to avoid the projectiles that are released afterwards.
- Due to their egg-tossing nature and the bullets that are spawned from their explosion, Dodours should be treated as medium-high priority targets and eliminated at quickly as possible.
Trivia[]
- The Dodour is a portmanteau of the words "dodo" and "dour".
- The creature based on this schema is likely the Phoenix Bomber, an enemy that appears in Serious Sam: Next Encounter. Like the Dodour, it is a bird that attacks by dropping bombs on its enemies.
