The Defensive Sleep State Subroutine was an enemy that appeared in Serious Sam: Tormental. It was removed along with Tourist difficulty after the game's full release.[1]

Overview[]

The Defensive Sleep State Subroutine was a very large green fish-like creature that resided within Mental's mind. They functioned as a sort of antibody in the mindspace, existing to get rid of any thoughts that might cause harm in Mental. It is immortal and cannot be defeated.

It is known, but still regarded as a an unusual phenemonon that Mental needs to fall into a deep slumber every hundred thousand or so years. When Sam Stone awakened him, he was in a dormant state and, arguably, wouldn't have woken up prematurely for many a millenia, if not for Sam. Why he needs this slumber is unknown, but according to ancient texts, when Mental is in such a vegetative stage, it is impossible to defeat him due to a variety of measures. First of all, he's apparently regenerating via magic during sleep, and any damage done to his body would be repaired within seconds.[2] Second of all however, it seems this restorative magic also works as a reflective shield of sorts, causing all damage done to Mental to be reflected on anyone trying to harm him. As such, it is said that Mental cannot be defeated in this state. Only when he's awake it is possible.[2]

Due to the removal of Tourist difficulty in the full release of Tormental, Long Beach Island is no longer reachable through any means available to the player. As a result, the Defensive Sleep State Subroutine can no longer be encountered either.

Appearances[]

The Subroutine only appeared in the Tourist difficulty ending of the game, on Long Beach Island. Normally, when the player leaves the Vault, they will start looping and go back to Mental Woods. However, when the player left the Vault on Tourist difficulty, they wouldl be transported to an area called Long Beach Island. When the player started moving, several of these enemies would spawn in the water. After the player reached a big area, they appeared and start chasing them.

Behavior and skills[]

The Defensive Sleep State Subroutine's only attack was to chase the player and touch them. This attack would instantly kill the player, even if they were equipped with health perks. They were very fast and it was impossible to outrun them. They could not be killed either due to their extremely high HP. Even if the Subroutine didn't move and the player keeps on shooting it, it would take a very long time to kill them.

As this enemy had a very large amount of health and its attack dealt very high damage, it was extremely hard to kill it without hacking the game.
