"Hello!"
―A Bighead's usual catchphrase.[src]

Croteam Heads (also known as Bigheads or Fan-Boys) are non-playable characters who appear as Easter Eggs throughout the Serious Sam franchise.

Overview[]

Bigheads appear as skinny humanoids with pale skin and large heads (an enlarged cranium or exposed brain) that has a face of one of the members of Croteam. They appear to wear the same clothes as Serious Sam.

Appearances[]

In all their appearances, Bigheads can only be found in secrets.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter[]

They are first seen in the first level of the game, Temple of Hatshepsut, and can be found a second time in Sacred Yards.

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter[]

Some Bigheads are seen in the opening cutscene flying on their crate bus to follow Sam on his journey to the planet Sirius. They decide to activate "hypercrate" (which causes the brake to malfunction) and they end up crashing into the SSS Centerprice, sending it back down to Earth. They then appear again in the first level Sierra de Chiapas as angels and then once again in The Citadel as devils, but they only have halos and horns in the classic version of the game.

Serious Sam 3: BFE[]

Bigheads only make one appearance in Serious Sam 3, in the "Hall of Developers" secret in The Dark Bride.

Behavior and skills[]

Bigheads are harmless towards the player, but are not passive. They may become an annoying obstruction as they tend to shout "Hey, Wait!", approach the player closely, introduce themselves and walk away which can happen even more than once per single NPC. In groups they may get stuck in tight spaces due to quite poor AI. However, in Serious Sam HD, they just simply say "Hello" and wave after spotting the player without approaching them, making them less of an annoyance and in Serious Sam 3: BFE, they don't say "Hello" or "Ouch" when player shoots at them; they can say "Ouch" in Serious Sam Fusion 2017, but their behavior can be different.

Killing Bigheads will not yield any points, nor information on NETRICSA will be given.

In Serious Sam Classics: Revolution, if the player is playing on I Am Ugh-Zan difficulty, Bigheads are now a threat as some of them can spawn with either a fire modifier that can harm the player over time or an ice modifier that can slow the player down.

Tactics[]

  • While not a threat, Bigheads can be killed very easily with any weapon if the player desires to do so - with no retaliation to be expected. An individual has about the same HP as any beheaded enemy (e.g. Beheaded Rocketeers). It takes a single Military Knife slash or two shots from the Schofield .45 or SOP38 Pistol to kill one. These three are probably the best weapons for this task with no wasteful ammo usage, especially on higher difficulties.
    • Should the player get surrounded, the Sledgehammer's horizontal and spinning swing attacks can be used to eliminate many Bigheads at once.
  • If the player is playing on Classics Revolution on I Am Ugh-Zan difficulty, killing Bigheads from a distance is recommended.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The Bighead model from The First Encounter was used from a prototype version of Mental with their faces put on Mental's head with an Alpha Sam texture edited onto his body.

Trivia[]

  • In Serious Sam 1, the background music will remain peaceful if the player approaches a Bighead. In Serious Sam HD however, this is not the case, and the music changes just like when the player is within the proximity of any enemy that has spotted them. This is because their alignment is set to "Evil" in their character behavior file, which allows them to follow the player around without hurting them.
  • Bigheads have the longest death animation of any enemy in the game. When killed, they will dance for a few seconds before falling very slowly towards the ground, coughing and moaning in pain. They also cannot be gibbed, no matter how they are killed, except in Serious Sam 1 and Revolution.
  • Like enemies, Bigheads will eventually disappear after a short period of time upon death in the original versions of Serious Sam 1, and disintegrate into dust in Serious Sam HD and Serious Sam 3.
  • Their death animation is out of sync with their death sound in Serious Sam HD and Serious Sam 3.
  • Every secret Bigheads appear in includes some ammunition or health.
