Cannonballs are a type of ammunition that serve as ammo for the SBC Cannon.

Overview

Cannonballs are an ammo pickup that supplies the cannon with ammo. The amount of ammo in each box of cannonballs depends on the game and (in some cases) the difficulty level. In Serious Sam 1, Serious Sam: Xbox, Serious Sam: Next Encounter, Serious Sam HD, Serious Sam VR and Serious Sam Classics: Revolution, each pile gives the player 4 cannonballs (8 on Tourist, Easy or Serious difficulty). Serious Sam 2 gives the player 8 cannonballs per pickup. In Serious Sam Advance, it gives the player 5 cannonballs per pickup.

Occurrence

Cannonballs are fairly rare throughout the games. In most of its appearances, cannonballs usually appear in the later levels when the player acquires the cannon, though they can be found earlier in secrets. In the Serious Sam 3: BFE and Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE campaign, cannonballs don't appear until The Power of the Underworld, but they can be in secrets much earlier, along with the cannon. Cannonballs are much more abundant in The Guardian of Time.

Appearance

In each game cannonballs appear in, they are a small pile of 4 cannonballs stacked up on one another.

Behind the scenes

  • During the pre-release builds of Serious Sam: The First Encounter, there was an alternate ammo for the cannon called the nukeball. According to its code, it would essentially be a more powerful version of the regular cannonball fired by the cannon. Since regular cannonballs are already very powerful when fully charged, it was probably removed for balancing purposes.
  • The nukeball's texture is in the final game's files and is an alternate skin for the regular cannonball model. Although in Test 1 it was supposed to be the regular cannon ammo and the cannon's ammo icon was supposed to be like the model (not 1 cannonball), there were supposed to be 3 cannonballs on the ammo HUD icon.
  • The cannonballs' model appears in Test 1 and Test 2, but cannot be picked up in-game. Both test cannonball models are the same as the final's.

Trivia

  • According to Rich Knuckles, Sam holds the cannonballs in his pockets.
