The Black Hole is a unique gadget and weapon introduced in Serious Sam 4. It makes a second appearance in Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem.

Overview[]

The black hole is a crystallized, contained gravitational singularity recovered from a destroyed alien portal. When thrown, it will cause a contained singularity collapse, which will suck in all affected enemies within its range.[1] Like all other gadgets, it will only last for a certain period of time. Once the timer expires, the black hole will dissipate. Any enemies that were not sucked into the black hole before it expires will be instantly killed. The player and any NPCs nearby will not be affected by or sucked into the black hole.

NETRICSA will display a holographic range display to assist the player and show them where the thrown black hole will land when it is selected.

Appearances[]

Serious Sam 4[]

The black hole is much rarer compared to other gadgets in-game. The player acquires three of them if they complete the "Portal Kombat" side quest in tbe level "The Die is Cast" once they deactivate the enemy portal, and again upon completion of the 'Portal Too' side quest in the level "In Carcassonne". The gadget can also occasionally be found in secrets; often they are found in hard to reach places that require jumping onto certain props in order to reach them.

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]

Black holes are extremely rare compared to the previous game, with only of these gadgets appearing throughout the campaign. They are obtained after the player completes the 'Alpha and Omega' side objective in "Roadside Picnic". The player can obtain more of them by replaying the same level on New Game+.

Tactics[]

  • Considering the rarity of this gadget, it should only be used in dire situations, such as if the player is overwhelmed by hordes of weak enemies or multiple tough ones.
  • The black hole is extremely effective against large swarms of enemies clustered together.
  • If the player wants to achieve the "Hole-in-One" achievement, they should only use the black hole for the final defense to kill all the enemies instead of killing any of them with other weapons. Also, they should wait a while for all the enemies to show up before using it, otherwise some enemies may not be killed by the black hole and survive, thereby preventing the player from obtaining the achievement.

Trivia[]

  • It is not fully understood why the black hole does not suck in objects within the environment. It's likely because the game engine would not be able to handle all the stress and performance issues from large objects such as trees being sucked into the hole, which would otherwise overload the system and could potentially result in an extreme drop in frame rate or even crashes.
