- For the weapon with a similar name that appears in Serious Sam 2 and Serious Sam's Bogus Detour, see Auto Shotgun.
The Autoshotgun is an automatic combat shotgun that makes its first appearance in Serious Sam 4, and later appears in Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem.
Overview[]
The autoshotgun is a weapon used by the Earth Defense Force. Being an automatic weapon, it does not have to pumped after each shot, unlike the 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun. It has roughly the same spread as the latter, if not slightly tighter. Thanks to its automatic mechanism, the weapon can deliver many rounds to a target in quick succession.[1] While this can offer an advantage, giving the weapon a very high damage output in a short space of time, the weapon drains ammo very quickly, and it needs to be manually reloaded after expending its magazine.[1] The weapon has a slightly long reload time, which preludes it use when faced against large swarms of enemies or when battling tougher opponents (this can, however, be alleviated with "The Quick and the Dead" S.A.M. skill). Another disadvantage is that ammunition for the weapon is scarce, so the player should use the weapon sparingly.
The weapon utilizes 12 gauge buckshot shells, which comes in the form of drum magazines. Unlike the abundant shells found throughout Serious Sam 4 and Siberian Mayhem, which are used for the 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun and Double Barrel Coach Gun, the autoshotgun is not compatiable with the latter, instead using its own unique type of ammunition. Like the A-24 Devastator, the weapon's magazine carries a capacity of up to 20 shells.
The autoshotgun fires one shot every time the fire key is pressed. Holding down the fire key allows for continous fire. The waepon fires seven pellets per shot in a rectangular-shaped pattern similar to that of the pump-action shotgun. Unlike other shotguns, the autoshotgun has a tighter spread, which allows the pellets to travel further slightly past medium range. The autoshotgun also does not need to cocked or manually reloaded after each shot (except for when the player has used up its magazine). This makes the weapon a more ideal alternative than the two shotguns, especially in the later levels.
Appearances[]
Serious Sam 4[]
The autoshotgun is first obtained in the sixth level in the campaign, "Morituri Te Salutant". Later on, it is given to the player by Sayid in "Vive la Résistance" if the player chooses to complete the first side quest. After that, it appears for the final time in "The Package".
Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]
In the expansion pack, the autoshotgun is a very rare weapon which is exclusively found as a secret. It can be found in tbe third level fof the game, "Roadside Picnic", during the "Alpha and Omega" side quest, obtainable by solving a puzzle that then opens a cabinet with the weapon inside. Its ammo then appears as secrets in the final two levels of the game (although can be also found in hidden places that don't count as secrets, albeit sparingly). The New Game+ option allows the player to use the autoshotgun in any level of the game if they obtained it in the normal playthrough on the same save slot and still have ammo for it.
Ivan, a member of Ledov's Squad, also uses this weapon.
Tactics[]
- The autoshotgun is an extremely useful weapon for clearing out groups or hordes of weak to medium targets, such as Aludran Microhoppers, Beheaded Bombers, Beheaded Firecrackers, Beheaded Kamikazes, Beheaded Rocketeers, Emetic Anthropolyps, Processed Anthropolyps, Octanian Gamma Troopers, Space Mummies, and Zubenhakrabian Spiders.
- The weapon can also be used against medium and tougher enemies like Aludran Reptiloids, Kleer Skeletons, Sirian Werebulls, Draconian Burners and Draconian Pyromaniacs, or Scrapjacks, but for tough enemies, the player needs to fire at their head or weak spot if they want to take them out quickly.
- Due to the weapon's reload time, it is best used to quickly resolve high-danger situations, such as being surrounded by or facing a large group of weak enemies.
Behind the scenes[]
- There exists a scope model for the autoshotgun that can be found in the game files. This suggested that the autoshotgun would be fitted with a scope, similar to the A-24 Devastator. It's also possible the player would've been able to aim with the scope with the secondary fire key. It was likely removed due to redundancy and that the weapon doesn't have a good enough range or accuracy to be used for long-range shooting.[2]
Trivia[]
- The weapon's name is capitalized as AutoShotgun in Serious Sam 4.
- The weapon's model is based on the Fostech Origin-12, an American semi-automatic shotgun which is widely known as "the fastest shotgun in the world".[3]
- Due to an oversight, the autoshotgun and A-24 Devastator have had their pickup sounds swapped. The sound that should play when picking up the autoshotgun instead goes to the Devastator, and vice-versa.[4][5]
