Arachnoids are a species encountered in the Serious Sam series.

Overview

Arachnoids are a primitive sentient species of scorpion-like creatures that evolved from arthropods. Despite their appearance, it appears that Mental has tampered with their genes, as Arachnoid legends state that a god came from the heavens, gave them a five-fingered right arm and told them to fight off any race it declares is an enemy.

Appearance

Arachnoids appear as large scorpion-like invertebrates with six legs, a long segmented tail with a sting and a human-shaped head. Their humanoid torso has a pattern resembling a face on it, which is probably meant to intimidate their opponents. In Serious Sam 1, they originally had two pincers, but after Mental altered their DNA, they have a hand on their right arm, which they use to carry their chaingun. In Serious Sam 3: BFE, Arachnoids still resemble their classic counterparts, though Adult Arachnoids carry chainguns concealed within their pincers, while Hatchling Arachnoids cut one of their arms off and mounted a chaingun in its place.

An Arachnoid's age can be measured by the color of its exoskeleton: hatchling Arachnoids have greyish-brown exoskeletons, juveniles have yellow exoskeletons and adults have red exoskeletons. Their exoskeletons provide decent protection from small-arms fire, though they can still take moderate damage from explosives or high-caliber rounds. The exoskeleton is tougher in adults than in younger specimens. In hatchlings, their necks have not fully developed, allowing one to deliver a fatal blow to the hatchling by snapping their neck with enough force.

Behavior

Arachnoids are an extremely aggressive race due to their religious convictions, where struggles for dominance often take place. They will shoot through their own ranks in fury.

Their main weaponry is a chaingun, which is equipped with a techno-magical ammunition replenisher to provide an infinite supply of ammunition. They fire this chaingun in rapid bursts with extreme accuracy, making it a formidable weapon against enemies. They can also use their tail sting against an opponent if they get too close. Their sting deals a lot more damage than their chaingun.

Several variants of Arachnoid are known to exist. In Serious Sam 1, there are two types of Arachnoid: adult and juvenile. Adults are much larger and tougher than the juveniles.

In Serious Sam 3: BFE, there are adult Arachnoids and hatchling Arachnoids. Hatchlings are newborn Arachnoids with a still-developing exoskeleton. They were deployed during the Mental War due to heavy demand for younger specimens. Like their classic counterparts, hatchlings carry a chaingun on one of their arms.

Adult Arachnoids are much larger than the adult versions in Serious Sam 1. Unlike the hatchlings, they are covered in augmented body armor which protects them from heavy gunfire and allows them to survive several hits. They carry chainguns hidden inside their pincers, which they will open up in order to fire at the target.

Technology

Being a primitive race, it is not known if Arachnoids possess superior technology. The only technology they appear to have is what Mental gave them after they joined his army.

Trivia

  • The word arachnoid can have several meanings. It can refer to a spider or arachnid or the arachnoid mater, one of the three meninges that surround the brain and spinal cord.
