Andrey Volkov was the CSO (chief scientific officer) of the survey team who worked at Dig Site no.36. He appears as a minor supporting character in Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem.
Biography[]
Very little information is known about him. From what can be gathered, Andrey was a scientist working at a large-scale mining operation at Dig Site no.36 in Siberia, Russia. When the survey team started digging, they discovered multiple monolithic structures arranged in a circle, as well as traces of a long-lost cult left behind, the Arc-Al-Magi. Astounded by these discoveries, the team reported these findings to the Earth Defense Force. After this discovery, Andrey theorized that the stone-like constructs were, in fact, a portal of Sirian origin. He also thought that the portal was capable of sending someone to an undetermined location in spacetime.[1]
Also found at the dig site was a manuscript written in ancient Proto-Slavic. From the book, Andrey discovered that the area was once inhabited by the Arc-Al-Magi, a clan of magicians dating back to ancient Egyptian times. According to the manuscript, these people had a connection with the Sirians and mysteriously vanished after going into hiding sometime during the 16th century.[2]
Andrey researched further into the unusual monolithic structure, and believed that it required power to operate, since it was laying dormant at the time. He speculated that the power source in question was a crystallized black hole. He reported his findings to the survey team, but they dismissed his theories and wouldn't allow him to experiment with such dangerous technology.[1] However, this still didn't stop him from obtaining them. He inserted one into the portal and it turned on. He entered the portal and it took him to a strange land filled with snow, ice and large crystals. According to his audio log, this strange land was likely located somewhere in Antarctica, although he didn't exactly know where he was.[1]
He said that someone can only stay in the icy world for a short period of time before the portal "throws them back". So, in order to resolve the problem, he says that someone needs to have a second black hole in their possession, and insert it into the portal to keep it running. Andrey cuts this short after reporting that Mental's forces had found the bunker, and regrets to inform anyone listening to the audio log that he is running out of time. Before ending his recording, a Gnaar can be heard growling in the background. It can be assumed that he was killed by two Gnaars - a male and a female - before the pair of them entered the Sirian portal that Andrey left activated, where they became hideously mutated and grew massive in size after being exposed to the radioactive crystals found at the dig site.[1][3]

Andrey's corpse can be found next to a table close to the Sirian portal deep inside the bunker, along with the audio log that he left behind.

Alexei Mikhaylov[]
Alexei was the overseer of the operation at the dig site. According to Andrey, the two of them didn't get along very well. Alexei also didn't believe Andrey's theories about the portal, and thought that he was being overconfident and immature over "a bunch of rocks".[1]
Personality[]
Andrey was a confident scientist who had a particular interest in archaeology and alien technology. He had conjured up several theories about the dig site, the monolithic structure and the purpose that it served, but he was disappointed when nobody took his theories seriously.
Powers and abilities[]
- High Intelligence: Andrey was skilled at his profession, being very knowledgeable on Sirian technology and how to use it. He was able to activate a Sirian portal that he believed was dysfunctional. He speculated that the portal required an alien black hole (recovered from an Octanian portal) in order to activate it.[1]
Appearance[]
Andrey was a young man, presumed to be in his early to mid thirties, with short brown hair and brown eyes. He had a slim build and wore a grey t-shirt, black pants and black leather shoes.
