The Adult Zubenhakrabian Spider is a fully grown Zubenhakrabian Spider. They are first introduced as enemies in Serious Sam 4, and later appear in the expansion Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem. It replaces the Juvenile Antaresian Spider from Serious Sam 3: BFE and Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope.
Overview[]
The Adult Zubenhakrabian Spider belongs to race of spider-like aliens that originate from an unnamed planet in the Gamma Librae binary star system, in the constellation of Libra. These creatures were discovered by the Sirians during their interstellar travels, who decided to keep them as exotic pets.[1]
The Spiders were once very docile creatures that grew no more than a couple of inches. After the Sirians became extinct at the hands of Mental, he discovered these creatures and enlarged them through unknown means, which resulted in them becoming very aggressive.[1]
Appearance-wise, the Adult Spider is a medium-sized creature about the size of a dog. Originally, the Spiders were much smaller in size, but they saw a rapid acceleration in growth after Mental tampered with their genes.[1] The Adults have a brown-orange exoskeleton with a reddish tinge, and several limbs that end with long, sharp claws. On their head they two pairs of eyes, and spikes can be seen protruding from the end of the head. The Spider's mouth contains several rows of serrated teeth that can deliver a powerful bite.[1]
Appearances[]
Serious Sam 4[]
Adult Spiders are fairly common enemies in the game, but are not as numerous as the Nymphs. They first appear in The Die is Cast, and then appear in fairly large numbers later in the game.
Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]
They first appear normally in Siberiade and Roadside Picnic in large groups, but can be found earlier in a secret container in The Song Of The Stormbringer.
Behavior and skills[]
Adult Spiders are bigger and stronger than the Nymphs, and have tougher exoskeletons, allowing them to survive more rounds from bullet-firing weapons, though they can still be killed with a single grenade or rocket, or a close range blast from the Double Barrel Coach Gun. The Spider's main form of attack is spitting an acid projectile at the target. At closer range, the Spider can deal a powerful bite with its strong and well-developed jaws. They can also cling onto walls and ceilings, owing to the adhesive surfaces on their feet.[1]
Tactics[]
- A single slice from the Combat Knife can kill an Adult Spider, making it an effective weapon for individuals or small groups. It is ineffective against large swarms due to the high probability the player will get swarmed by both Adults and Nymphs.
- All types of shotguns are strong weapons to use on groups of Spiders. One shot from the Double Barrel Coach Gun is enough to kill one if all the pellets land.
- The 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun and Autoshotgun also work well against individuals or small groups of these enemies.
- For hordes of Spiders containing Adults, C-4 Demolition Charges, the MK III Grenade Launcher or XPML21 Rocket Launcher can quickly clear them out.
- Don't allow the Adults to get too close; their bite can deal a lot of damage and this makes them dangerous when grouped together with Nymphs or other Adults.
- The M29 Infantry Assault Rifle and XM214-A Minigun works well with Adults, especially when dual-wielded.
Behind the scenes[]
- The Adult Spider had a slightly different design, as shown in early concept art. It is still vaguely similar to the final model, but it features yellow glowing eyes, much smaller arms that are held upwards, and a red body with a light bluish tinge.
Trivia[]
- The Spider uses the same acid projectile fired by Antaresian Spiders.
- The Adults bear a slight resemblance to the Arachnids from the Starship Troopers franchise.
- In Serious Sam 4, the Adult Arachnoid reuses the Adult's death sound when it dies.
