The ATV is a land vehicle that was cut from Serious Sam 2 during development. It appears as a functioning vehicle in Serious Sam 4 and Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem.
Overview[]
The ATV is a small vehicle powered by either a two-stroke or four-stroke engine. It has only one seat, therefore only a single person can be on it at any given time. Like the combine harvester and motorcycle, it has 100 health and can be used to perform drive-bys with any weapon the player has equipped, though they cannot use the scope when using the A-24 Devastator, RAPTOR Sniper Rifle, or TCC-2 "Perun" Crossbow. The ATV will take damage from enemy projeciles or explosions, and will also take damage from any of the player's weapons if they shoot at it.
The ATV is slower than the motorcycle, but can still achieve more significant speed than the tractor. Unlike the aforementioned vehicles, the ATV is able to retain its speed on rough terrain and off-road environments, making it a suitable choice if the player prefers to travel off-road or wants to use shortcuts for speedrunning purposes.
Appearances[]
Serious Sam 4[]
The ATV appears only appears in the tenth level of the game, "One for the Road", parked outside the entrance to a quarry in the French countryside. Sam uses the vehicle to get to Carcassonne to meet up with Kenny. He ditches the ATV once he establishes contact with him. This is the only appearance of the vehicle throughout the entire game.
Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]
An ATV appears in the level "Siberiade" at an Earth Defense Force outpost after the player crosses the bridge. Unlike in Serious Sam 4, the ATV comes with four color schemes; red, white, orange, and blue. It has a random chance to use any of these colors when the level is loaded for the first time.
Tactics[]
- Like with other vehicles, the ATV has limited health, so care should be taken when using it when a large fight breaks out.
- Additionally, if the vehicle runs out of health while the player is still riding it, they will die, so the player should keep this information in mind.
- While the ATV can be useful for dodging projectiles tossed by enemies by strafing left or right, it is still ill advised to use the vehicle head on against enemies or for when dealing with medium to large-sized groups. It can become very easy to get overwhelmed with hordes of Processed Anthropolyps, Gnaars or Kleer Skeletons, which can easily deplete the ATV's health if they happen to catch up with the vehicle and swarm it.
Behind the scenes[]
- In Serious Sam 2, the ATV has no stats, nor does any code for the ATV exist, so it's impossible to know how the ATV behaved. The only evidence of the ATV having existed at one point is that its HUD image can be found in the game's files. Why it was cut is unknown. On the Steam release, screnshots from the beta of Serious Sam 2 were uploaded. One of the photos shows three ATVs being used by Orc Gunners and one Orc Commander. In-game, the ATV was supposed to be seen at the end of the level "Unreal Wasteland".
- An unused Serious Sam 2 screenshot shows Sam wielding Uzis on an ATV, suggesting that the player would be able to use weapons while driving the ATV. This feature was later added to Serious Sam 4 and its expansion pack, Siberian Mayhem.
Trivia[]
- The Triple-A logo can be seen on the front and back of the ATV.
- The words "Viva la Resistance" can be seen on the ATV's dials. This is a reference to the level that takes place in Carcassonne, as well as the quote Sam says in the level's opening cutscene. Although in this case, the word "viva" is replaced with "vive".
- In Siberian Mayhem, this text is replaced with "Never gonna give you up". This is a reference to the song of the same name by Rick Astley, which is also the subject of the popular "rickrolling" Internet meme.
