The AS-24, commonly referred to as the Devastator, is a heavily modified automatic shotgun that fires explosive rounds. The HPHE rounds fired by the Devastator can pierce small enemies along the way and deliver fragmentation damage on impact with larger targets.

The weapon first appears in Serious Sam 3: BFE, and later reappears in Serious Sam's Bogus Detour, Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope, and Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE.

Overview

The AS-24 is often called the "Devastator" because of the effects it produces on the battlefield when fired continuously for a longer time. The original Maxwell Atchission design was heavily modified over the years. It now allows muzzle velocities with such force that the rounds literally pierce through a target.

Being an automatic shotgun, the Devastator does not need to be cocked each time a round is fired, unlike the 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun. It can carry up to 20 rounds, which come in drum magazines.

The Devastator's rounds travel at a much faster speed than the XPML21 Rocket Launcher, allowing them to be used effectively at a further distance, though aim compensation is still required as the rounds do not hit instantly.

Compared to other types of ammunition found in the campaign, ammo for the Devastator is quite uncommon, though it appears more frequently in later levels of the campaign, often before a large battle starts.

If the Serious Digital edition or Bonus Content was purchased for Serious Sam 3: BFE, players are given access to a limited exclusive DLC, which adds a sniper scope onto the Devastator, however, in the Xbox 360 version of the game, the scope comes by default.

Occurrence

In Serious Sam 3 and Serious Sam 3 VR: BFE, the Devastator first appears in Unearthing the Sun, but can be acquired in a secret in The Silent Riddler. In Serious Sam's Bogus Detour, the weapon first appears in Trouble in Troy. In Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope, the Devastator can be purchased from the weapon menu, along with ammo.

Tactics

Serious Sam 3: BFE

  • The Devastator is extremely effective against Technopolip helicopters, as it can take one down in about five hits and its projectiles move fast enough that the helicopter can't dodge. It also works very well against Major Bio-mechanoids, Minor Bio-mechanoids and Scrapjacks at long distances.
  • As ammunition isn't always in abundance, it is best to use the weapon against tougher enemies, such as Scrapjacks, Khnums, or Major Bio-mechanoids.
  • The Devastator is somewhat effective against Khnums, as it takes at least 10 shots to kill one. It is best to first fire a fully charged cannonball at the Khnum and then finish it off with the Devastator.
  • It is very effective against hordes of common enemies such as Kleer Skeletons, as the projectile fired from the Devastator can pierce through several enemies at once.

Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope

  • The Devastator is a great weapon for clearing out groups of Drones, Fleet Fighters, Skeletons, and other fast or weak enemies.
  • Its fast projectiles are good for eliminating small groups of Kalopsies, especially when dual-wielded.
  • Like in Serious Sam 3, the Devastator is a brilliant anti-Technopolip weapon.

Trivia

  • The Devastator sometimes has a very large, but weak splash damage range when compared to the rocket launcher. Even if the player is at a normal safe distance a rocket can explode, the Devastator shell explosion may still afflict the player, and deliver a very negligible amount of damage.
  • When Jones cocks his Devastator in the opening cutscene, you can hear a cocking sound, but no animation is seen.
  • The AS-24 Devastator is a possible nod to the Devastator in Duke Nukem 3D.
