- For the weapon cut from Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter and T.E.O.R, see AK-47.
The AK-74MX is an assault rifle that appears in Serious Sam 4 and Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem. It replaces the M29 Infantry Assault Rifle as the automatic rifle for the expansion pack.
In Serious Sam 4, a variant of this weapon is used by NPCs, especially by members of the French Resistance. It cannot be acquired or used in the game, as it is exclusive to Siberian Mayhem.
Overview[]
The AK-74MX is a Russian assault rifle that is based on a variant of the AKM. It has been modified to accept the unified 5.56x45mm NATO rounds, which is compatible with many other infantry weapons, such as the M29 Infantry Assault Rifle.[1] The weapon was designed specifically for use in close-quarters and large-scale engagements. Though the weapon's originally, largely unaltered design stems from the middle of the 20th century, the AK-74MX continues to be one of the most popular weapons in the world, and has proved its effectiveness in numerous armed conflicts all over the world. It has also seen use during the Tunguska Offensive and the Mental War.[1]
Performance-wise, the AK-74MX is almost identical to its M29 counterpart. The exceptions are that the AK-74MX has a slightly lower rate of fire and it has a smaller magazine size of 50 rounds instead of 80. Despite these flaws, it packs more of a punch with its 13 damage per shot, which can make it an effective weapon against weak, medium, and even tough opponents, especially when a player fires at their weak spot, making it an effective and versatile weapon fit for many scenarios and against different kinds of enemies. The weapon has the same bullet dispersion as the M29, and can be quite inaccurate when hip-firing, especially when dual-wielded. The player can aim down the sights of the weapon by holding down the secondary fire key to fire more accurate shots.
The player can obtain a skin for the AK-74MX, called "Hot Blood", by defeating Howard Brand on Serious difficulty without loading a saved game during the final boss fight. Firing the rifle with this skin equipped causes the weapon to heat up and making a sizzling sound. This is purely a cosmetic effect and has no effect on the rifle's damage output or its rate of fire.
Appearances[]
Serious Sam 4[]
Michelle and several French Resistance members can be seen wielding the rifle. Sayid later acquires one if the player chooses to complete "The Art of War" side objective in the level "Vive la Résistance".
Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem[]
The AK-74MX is first acquired in an equipment case by Sam in the first level, "A Smell Of Petroleum Prevails". Ammo for the weapon is plentiful, and can sometimes be found in secrets.
Ledov and Ivan can both be seen carrying the rifle after Sam meets up with his squad in the level "Roadside Picnic".
Tactics[]
- The AK-74MX is a very effective and weapon fit for many combat situations. Its moderate-high damage output, rapid firing rate and quick reload speed can allow the player to finish off small or medium-sized groups of weak enemies quickly. Even medium targets, such as Common Aludran Reptiloids, Scrapjacks, and Sirian Werebulls can be taken down with this weapon, but it is best to fire at their head as it deals much more damage this way.
- Aiming down the sights is recommended when using this weapon, otherwise the bullets will likely miss.
- The AK-74MX is very effective against weak enemies, such as Beheaded Bombers, Beheaded Firecrackers, Beheaded Kamikazes, Beheaded Rocketeers, Gnaars, Octanian Commanders, Kleer Skeletons, Octanian Gamma Troopers, Octanian Grenadiers, and Processed Anthropolyps, especially when there are large groups of them.
- When playing in New Game+, the AK-74MX is recommended to be used against these enemies more often than other weapons in the player's arsenal, as they spawn in much larger numbers in this mode.
- The weapon becomes even more effective with the "Full Speed Ahead" S.A.M. skill, and can become almost as effective as the XM214-A Minigun and can allow the player to mow down hordes of weak enemies at once or deal devastating damage to tougher opponents.
- It is one of the best anti-Aludran Microhopper and Combat Drone weapons, as they tend to show up in large swarms and attempt to flank the player at close to medium range.
- Dual-wield AKs work very well against large hordes of weak enemies lined in a row or against tough enemies such as the Major Bio-mechanoid, especially the teleporting Major that shows up in The Song Of The Stormbringer. It is not recommended to use the AK when faced with groups of Majors, though, as the player needs to get quite close to ensure most of the bullets hit and this puts the player in danger of dying to or receiving massive damage from the Major's rockets.
Behind the scenes[]
- NETRICSA mentions that the weapon can be fitted with a scope, though no such attachment appears in the game. This idea was scrapped before the final version of the game came out, and the weapon's in-game description mentioning a scope is just leftover data during the game's development, since the developers forgot to remove it.
Trivia[]
- Despite its name, it is called "AK-47" in the game files.
- When Sam reloads the weapon, he ejects the magazine with a new one and the ejected magazine then appears in his hand, while the new magazine disappears. This can be seen more clearly in the editor.
- This is also a common and (likely) intended feature. It is also a recurring theme in reloading animations in many first-person shooters.
- Like the M1A2 Thompson from Serious Sam 1, the AK-74MX is a fictional variant of a real-life weapon.
- A variant of this weapon appears in Serious Sam 4, which has had its stock removed. It is exclusive to NPCs and cannot be used by the player.
- This variant of the rifle also reuses the M29's firing and reload sounds.
