This subject appears in Serious Sam: Double D.

For the shotgun in the main series, see 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun.

The 12 Gauge Shotgun is a pump-action shotgun that appears in Serious Sam: Double D and Serious Sam: Double D: XXL. It is the only shotgun in the game.

Overview[]

The shotgun fires a tight spread of pellets when the fire key is pressed. Each pellet does a decent amount of damage, but if most of the pellets connect, it can deal a high amount of damage per shot. The gun must be pumped between each shot, making its rate of fire lower than other weapons. Despite its slow rate of fire, it can work well with stacks with rapid-firing weapons, such as the Thompson submachine gun or XL4 Lasergun.

Upgrades[]

The shotgun can receive several upgrades in Serious Sam: Double D: XXL, which can increase its potential and firepower, especially when stacked with strong or rapid-firing weapons. Upgrades can be bought from The Trader using Cerebral Controller, but some upgrades have to be unlocked by progressing through the game.

12 Gauge Shotgun Temporal Dilator Temporal Dilator
Shots slow down enemies when they hit them, though they deal a bit lower damage.
12 Gauge Shotgun Fear Striker Fear Striker
Fires pellets that home in on targets.
12 Gauge Shotgun Cybernetic Bees Cybernetic Bees
Fires a large swarm of cybernetically-enchanced bees that sting enemies that will lift the target into the air. The bees can harm regular and armored enemies.
12 Gauge Shotgun Cannon Cannon
Turns the shotgun into a massive, ancient cannon originally used in naval warfare. Charge to fire the shot faster. Gibs smaller enemies on contact.

Tactics[]

  • The shotgun's tight spread and high amount of damage if most of the pellets connect makes it very useful for any situation, even strong enemies or bosses.
  • When upgraded, the shotgun becomes a much more reliable weapon to use on strong or armored foes.
  • The Temporal Dilator upgrade is very useful for slowing down fast and dangerous enemies like groups of Beheaded Kamikazes, Femikazes and Kleer Skeletons. It can also be used to slow down tougher enemies as well such as Caterfighters or Major Bio-mechanoids.
  • Because of how handy the shotgun is, it works well in just about any combination. For example, combining it with a rapid-fire weapon like the Thompson or lasergun allows the player to hit a target with a shotgun, then continue hammering it with the rapid-fire weapon while the shotgun is pumped. Combining multiple shotguns with multiple rapid-fire weapons can quickly destroy even the strongest enemies.
  • When paired with short-range weapons, like the chainsaw and the flamethrower, the shotgun will make quick work of enemies at close quarters. Having a stack built around this idea is always handy for certain close-quarters levels, such as Pyramid Looting.
  • Shotgun ammo is common enough that it can be used frequently.
  • The Temporal Dilator upgrade is an ideal upgrade to have for the shotgun. It can slow down any enemy, regardless of its size and allow the player to finish them off whilst reducing the chances of them taking damage. It is more effective to use this on single large enemies and bosses than small enemies, however.
  • The Fear Striker is a very useful upgrade, as the pellets track targets that are behind the player, or on platforms above or below them. It is recommended to have a shotgun with this upgrade placed at the top of a stack so that the pellets don't touch the ground and to improve the chances of having most of the pellets make contact.
  • The cannon upgrade is the ultimate upgrade for the shotgun. When placed in a stack with several LM32 Rocket Launchers and MadDog Grenade Launchers, it becomes the strongest combination in the game and can deal devastating damage to the strongest enemies and bosses.
